Located in Disenchantment Bay, Alaska, the Hubbard Glacier is the largest tidewater glacier in North America. A tidewater glacier is one that flows from mountains into saltwater. Hubbard is 6 or 7 miles wide, 76 miles long and its face extend 300-400 feet above the water while 250 feet lie below the water surface. It is often referred to as the “Galloping Glacier” since it is actively advancing while many other glaciers are receding.

We booked an excursion to leave our cruise ship and boarding a smaller boat, holding 150 passengers, to get a closer look at the glacier. We got within a half mile of this monster of ice. It was not a cheap adventure, but as one young woman on our boat said through tears, “it is worth every penny”.

I was able to keep focus long enough to snap a photo or two. Ok. It was more like 500, but I am onluy sharing a small fraction of those.

In the morning we boarded a bus for the short trip to the Denali Train Depot. Our luggage had already been picked up and would be transported to the cruise ship. The train would take us on the nine plus hour ride to Whittier, its final stop is right across the street from the cruise port.

We had assigned seats for the ride and found ourselves in the front of the last car. Our seats were at a table for four. Two seats facing forward and two backwards. No one was in the other seats so we were able to spread out, our backpacks taking the empty seats.

The train cars are double decker. The top is the passenger compartment with a glass top while the lower deck is a restaurant. Breakfast and Lunch were available for an added cost. There was a bartender and hostess in each car. The hostess narrated much of the ride, pointing out interesting sights along the way and the bartender made sure everyone was fully hydrated.

There was also a viewing platform downstairs. Each car had one. Ours was unique since we were the last car. I spent a lot of time down there taking phots without having to worry about glare from the windows. Here are a few of the pics I took along the way.

Horseshoe Lake Trail in Denali National Park is between two and three miles, depending on who you talk to. If you include the hike to get to the trailhead it is closer to four miles round trip. It is listed as easy to moderate. There are a bunch of stairs up and down so that is what puts it in the moderate range.

This was our one real hike. If we get up to Alaska again, we intend to skip shore excursions and do more hiking. To me this was well worth the time and effort. Plus, it was free.

We asked the driver from our Tundra Tour to drop us off at the visitor center and after a visit to that building (where we got some bad directions) we found our way to the trailhead. The trailhead is off some railroad tracks which made for some tough walking just to get started. Princess has a free shuttle that got us back to the lodge. By the way, if you decide to visit Denali while staying at one of the lodges, do not believe the shuttle directions for stops. None of them stop at the railroad crossing. We saw a couple try to get on every bus that stopped for the tracks (as required by law). Not sure if they ever figured it out.

At last, some real mountains!

These are from our Denali "Tundra Wilderness Tour". We got up at 3:00 A.M. for this one so you may want to set your alarm to get the full experience.

The tour was basically a three hour bus ride with just a couple stops. Most of these pics were taken through a moving bus window. The bus was moving, not the window, so very few of these will make it to my website. We went deep into the park. 43 miles until there was no more road.

We did see some wildlife, a couple of which I captured on SD card.

If you are wondering, I find Black and white much more dramatic so I use it a lot.

It is Monochrome Sunday so here are some clouds from our vacation.

It was overcast most days but, aside from one day, we did not have much rain. Even in the rainforest we only had a few moments of sprinkles at the beginning of our hike. Just enough to prompt our wearing of rain gear.

We boarded a bus early morning (thanks for not forgetting us, Princess) and headed out to take a steamboat ride. It was a rainy day but we made the best of it. I put my camera's raincoat and did not let the drizzle get in the way of our fun.

We boarded the Discovery at their landing and headed down the Chena River. We paused to check out some sled dogs and stopped to get off at the Chena Village (a separate post).

Back at the landing we grabbed some lunch and did a little shopping before getting back on the bus to head to the Princess Wilderness Lodge in Denali.

Not to worry. Mountains, glaciers and whales are on the way. We might even see a bear.

We left Downtown Fairbanks and the fighting homeless and hopped on the shuttle to Pioneer Park. This is a community park focused on the old days of the state. It features many old buildings and equipment, a train that runs around the perimeter, many gift shops and a playground for the kids. It is a popular spot for local families on the weekends and summer days.

After wandering around a bit, we took the shuttle back to the Princess Lodge and walked over to Pike
S Landing, a small collection of motels, restaurant and Pike’s Park.
