There is no bad weather, only bad clothes.

All the planning and prep went out the window immediately upon arriving in London. We followed the forecasts, and updated our itinerary, but Mother Nature said hold my hold my spring water. Rain induced flooding in London and three inches, 75mm to my metric friends, of snow dropped in Scotland. Temps never peaked above 4C (38F) until our last day in Ireland. The weather made for interesting photos, but our clothing wasn’t enough. Raincoats wet out immediately and out down coats got wet. was a trooper and kept pushing ahead, but eventually we both got sick.

The day we made it to Ireland and joined up with the rest of the family we enjoyed an incredible falconry history lesson. Feed a Harris hawk and held some owls, but the temperature was right above freezing and the rain had both kids and adults seeking shelter in the cars. We continued to smile through, but the burden of effort is so much more when you’re cold and wet. I will always bring a waterproof raincoat with me.

Highland Coo

Trying to make the most of this trip celebrating my 40th trip around the sun. We got stopped trying to hike in the highlands as storm ‘Bert’ here in UK/Scotland is pulling out all the stops and decorating the British isles in snow. While seeking the shelter of a pub we crossed path a small herd of these adorable coos

Terceira, Portugal.

One of the most fun and interesting places I’ve traveled too. I wasn’t expecting much when we traveled here, but it was such a blast.

I’ve been trying to capture a pelican in flight for a while. They’re skiddish, fast, and quiet. They also have a extra sense that when I have by camera and will then only show me their backside. I have taken plenty of photos of Pelican butts and they aren’t interesting. This day I was lucky and got to watch a beautiful sunrise and dozens of not hundereds of Pelicans.

When I first got to this beach, the tide was still “going out”. I scrambled over the boulders to get close to the water. These basketball sized and shape boulders like to move under your feet, and are a challenge to get a comfortable seat.

In the blackness of pre sunrise I couldn’t see anything beyond the head lamp. I headed towards the sound of waves breaking. It took several guess shots to find my spot and get the camera oriented right. Of course the morning I was up early and prepared was the least exciting sunrise. I guess I need to go back to Acadia.

I thought I knew what I wanted. There’s been a specific Pelican photo in my head for a while but I haven’t been able to capture, until now. That image is not the one I posted above.

After many attempts I got the image I wanted but continued to keep photographing and trying different things. This image was one of the very last images I took that day. A pelican landed right next to me while I was crouched and waiting. I reflexively lifted my camera, burst a couple of frames that filled my memory cards, so I watched for a few more minutes the slowly walked away leaving the birds in peace.

When I got home the image I wanted for so long looked good on the big computer monitor, but this series of frames was awesome! I’m grateful I had the time to go out and so happy I stayed longer to get past what “I knew what I wanted”

We traveled half way around the world to see a familiar fin.

On this day we were blessed with opportunities or see dolphins, man of war, a turtle, and this Ocra.
