It’s Waterfall Wednesday! This is Greeter Falls, located near Altamont, Tennessee. If you are looking for several waterfalls in one spot, this is the perfect place to go! Located in the Savage Gulf State Park, a two mile loop trail takes you to several waterfalls and past some amazing cliffs and rocks. Five waterfalls can be found along this trail: Boardtree and Lower Boardtree, a third unnamed waterfall for those wanting to go off trail, and Upper and Greeter Falls. Greeter Falls is by far the star of the show. To access the falls, a spiral metal staircase leads you down to bring the falls into view. It is one of the most enchanting places I have ever been. Another longer and steeper wooden staircase leads you down to the bottom. Then, make your way across the rocks and sit directly in front of this fifty foot waterfall and be mesmerized by view and the roar of the water.

Waterfall Wednesday! Upper Tahquamenon Falls, Paradise, Michigan, where the water flows a light brown. The color comes from tannins that leach into the water from the cedar and hemlock trees and bark in the swamps upriver.

Deep in the woods of the Daniel Boone National Forest, near London, KY, lies this stunning waterfall, Pine Island Double Falls. Driving to the trailhead requires a little bit of luck and a whole lot of faith that Google Maps won’t take you on a wild goose chase. I have attempted to get to this trailhead on four different occasions but only made it twice. Narrow gravel roads twist and turn through the woods, with no houses or people for miles. At the trailhead, there is barely more than a pull off to park. The trail is marked with ribbons on tree trunks, switching back and forth over a small creek. The whole experience feels completely sketchy until you arrive at the falls and the payoff is beyond rewarding. You feel as though you have just been transported into another world, walking into an enormous rock house, the falls spilling over the cliff. The green rhododendrons make you feel like you have stepped into a tropical paradise. This one is best seen after a hard rain. If you didn’t get lost coming in, be careful, you might going out. This one ranks high on the adventure scale and worth every bit of it!

Today’s picture comes from one of the most magical stare parks I have ever been to. Located in the Finger Lakes region, Watkins Glen State Park boasts a gorge that descends over 400 feet and is lined by shale cliffs. Shale rock looks like layers upon layers of flat rocks stacked. A stream has cut its way through the gorge, leaving some areas barely a few feet wide, then opening up into wider basins. It is home to multiple waterfalls, with Rainbow Falls (below) being one of the most iconic. I visited this area last year in the fall, shortly after the leaves had peaked. This place definitely boggles the mind at the forces of nature that carved out this gorgeous park.

Michigan offers miles of beautiful shoreline along the Great Lakes, however, the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in the Upper Peninsula is probably some of the most stunning. The incredible sandstone cliffs lining Lake Superior have been sculpted by wind, waves and water. As water seeps through the rock, minerals stain the rock colors, making it look as if the rocks have been painted. Miner’s castle is one of the most iconic rock formations in this area. It juts out into the crystal clear waters of Lake Superior. In the evening, as the sun goes down, it’s nearly impossible to tell where the lake ends and the sky begins.

Fancher Falls, a picturesque waterfall, tucked back in a cove off of Center Hill Lake in Tennessee. At approximately 80 feet tall, this waterfall is only accessible by boat. It’s a beautiful sight after a nearly three mile paddle out to it. There is a bonus waterfall on the opposite cliff, called Mist Falls. It is about 100 feet tall but usually just a delicate flow of water.
