Swipe to see the sweetest big sister hands helping me. :) I love to see what interest level your older children have with their new sibling.
Some little ones cannot get close enough! They want to be involved in everything. Others keep their distance and need a little more encouragement. And some? Well, I match their energy. They want to hold baby? Great! They are done in two seconds! Also ok!
When I say my newborn sessions are up to 3 hours long, some people are shocked.😳
But this is why:
EVERYONE (including your older children) are adjusting. Baby is adjusting to their new outside world, mom and dad are adjusting to juggling kids with multiple different needs, and big sibs? They are just on the rollercoaster of emotions and learning to share attention.
It’s so good, but it takes time and NO ONE needs a rushed experience where you are white knuckling the side of the crib, hoping we get something. 😅
NOPE.
That’s why we take our time. You need less “let’s hope this goes well” and more, “hey my friend is coming over to take our photos.”
You need someone who cares just as much about the older child as they do the newborn.
And it’s a perk of you can choose someone who has walked this path before as a parent themselves (4 times in my case.).
You need someone who can match your child’s energy that day with calm and patience.
So your child runs away to play for a bit or they need a snack?? Absolutely. They want to help hold the baby? I’m on it. You need a break to feed the baby while dad takes the big kids to read a book? We can do that.
No rush. No “Are we out of time!?”
We’ve got this, friend. You don’t need to worry. 🤍
