Rt66 100th Anniversary - Sitgreaves Pass, AZ.
This lesser-known stop along Route 66 in western Arizona caught our eye as a scenic overlook, so we pulled over on our way to Oatman. Sitgreaves Pass is a 3,586-foot mountain gap in the Black Mountains. It was nearly dark when we arrived, but the crosses and memorials were clearly visible—not what we expected at a typical overlook. We asked Kate and Jake to look into it and learned that the site is not a traditional cemetery. Instead, it holds memorials to people whose cremated remains were scattered at the pass. Over the years, friends and family have added crosses, plaques, and other markers to honor them, through both private tributes and public ceremonies.
The Sitgreaves Pass Memorial combines remembrance with sweeping views of the Black Mountains, offering a quiet place to reflect on the region’s history and enjoy the dramatic landscape.

Rt66 100th Anniversary - Cadillac Ranch, Amarillo, TX.
The Amarillo Cadillac Ranch (also known as the Caddy Ranch), is a public art work, created in 1974, that is exhibited in open ranchland normally used for farming and breeding cattle.
This "work of art" consists of a group of 10 Cadillac cars buried nose-down in the ground, so that they can show off their tailfins, with an east to west alignment.
Each car belongs to a different model, from 1948 to 1963. The estimated cost would be $3,250; $250 to hire a backhoe to dig the holes and $300 for each of the ten cars. The cars are supposed to be tilted at exactly the same angle as that of the faces of the Great Pyramid of Khufu, in Cairo, Egypt.
The cars did not remain untouched for long, shortly after 1976, visitors started painting graffiti on them, and there was no way to protect the cars.
From the start, visitors were encouraged to spray‑paint the cars, and over more than 50 years, thousands of layers have been added
This constant layering has built up to several inches of paint overall, with many sources citing around 10 inches as the average thickness. In some spots, especially where multiple coats overlap, the paint can be even thicker, and chunks can crack and fall off, revealing earlier colors.

Just ran across these old photos I took of the Roche de Boeuf Interurban Bridge. I'm glad they are restoring it. Such a big part of the history of the area.

Rt66 100th Anniversary - El Rancho Hotel, Gallup, NM.

The El Rancho Hotel was built in 1937 and is located on old Route 66. From the 1930s to 1950s, the hotel became a temporary home for many Hollywood stars. The El Rancho Hotel has been designated a National Historic Site. Autographed photos of the movie stars who have visited and Navajo Rugs surround the two-story rustic lobby.

During the 1930s and 1940s, more than 100 westerns were filmed around Gallup, with Hollywood’s most notable stars staying at the El Rancho. Notable guests included some of the giants of Hollywood’s Golden Age: Ronald Reagan, John Wayne, Katherine Hepburn, Lucille Ball, Errol Flynn, Mae West, Kirk Douglas, Gregory Peck, and Humphrey Bogart, among others.

Rt66 100th Anniversary - Petrified Forest National Park

Arizona’s Petrified Forest and Painted Desert have scenery like nowhere else—the kind that gives your camera a workout. You can still spot parts of an old roadbed and weathered telephone poles marking the famous “Main Street of America.” Petrified Forest National Park is the only park in the National Park System with a stretch of Historic Route 66. This busy highway ran from Chicago to Los Angeles, but it was more than just a way to get around. For travelers, it meant a chance to find new opportunities, have adventures, and explore new places. Could you imagine driving through all of this back in the 30's and 40's.
