Last night:
“Momma, can I hold your hand?”
“Momma, I’ll always be your friend.”
“I’ll never ever, ever leave you.”
“I’ll never stop holding your hand.”
“Pinky promise.”
“Touch noses.”
“Momma, I’ll never stop loving you.”

I went to bed with tears rolling down my cheeks. Because while I know in that moment he meant those words with his whole heart, I also know it won’t always be this way. As we grow older our relationship will change— there will be a day when he won’t want to hold my hand, a day when he does pack up & move away, a day when we have to say goodbye. While his words can still be true, they will hold a different meaning than they do now.
I want to bottle up the moment & hold onto it forever. But, I can’t.
Everything changes, time moves on, we grow old. That is the thing that makes life so darn difficult, yet also what makes a tiny moment so darn sacred.
The great paradox.
He may always love me, but not this way. I can only hope that someday when he says similar words to someone else they will consider it a gift to be loved by him, just as I do. 💙
