Tell your story! What a coincidence that my book, the National Guard Association of the US (NGAUS) book, ‘The Oral History Project,’ arrived the same day I completed my own Military Memory book.
I love that the NGAUS Oral History book has Eddie and me in the friends section, as we met in officers’ school in 1980, and became friends there.
Eddie said that I was following him everywhere. It was true, since we were in formation! 😆
As you can see in my story, by the time of my retirement in 2015, 19,000 Soldiers and Airmen from the SC National Guard had deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. Now, in the article at the SCNG link, ‘SCNG Fallen Heroes,’ the number is 25,000. Numerous service members deployed multiple times. Retired Lt. Col. Teddy L. Call, on page 533 of the NGAUS Oral History book, lists his deployments: El Salvador 🇸🇻, Iraq 🇮🇶, Syria 🇸🇾, Kuwait 🇰🇼, Egypt 🇪🇬, Jordan 🇯🇴, Oman 🇴🇲, Puerto Rico 🇵🇷, and the Virgin 🇻🇬 🇻🇮. Teddy is one of many extraordinary men and women we worked with in the military.
At home, we did everything we could to support the Troops deployed ‘downrange.’ We established the Service Member and Family Care Office, which provided extensive support. We coordinated with the Commanders and the Red Cross for emergency leave; worked with Family Support Groups, Chaplains, and JAG officers; held Send Off and Welcome Home Ceremonies, Freedom Salute Ceremonies, and Purple Heart Ceremonies; provided Casualty Assistance Officers and Funeral Honors; raised money for monetary relief; and much more.
On my memory book page, you see Chaplain (Col.) Steve Shugart, PhD, is lighting a candle for each Soldier in a Memorial Candle Lighting Ceremony. Sadly, after my retirement, one was added to the fallen, bringing the total to seventeen. Read their stories in the link.
It's important to get your own story published. Since we’re in the digital age, we will not find many shoe boxes in the attic with letters in them, years later. The Oral History is ongoing and includes many organizations. Get your story in there!
I'm excited that my new website will be up and running soon. It will feature a Military section, where I’ll publish military events and stories based on my own and Eddie’s combined 71 years of experience.
