Lisa Langell Photography http://www.langellphotography.com Great photography doesn't just document that you saw it. It captu That desire, for me, is absolutely inextinguishable.

"I have always been compelled to discover and capture those elusive, split-second moments that translate into one-of-a-kind, evocative images. When asked to describe the style of my artwork, I find that the best descriptions come directly from those who are drawn to my work. After all, they are the ones experiencing 'the moment' via my translation of it through my camera. Their words mean so much to me, as the purpose I breathe into my artwork is to not simply document the natural world, but to interpret it into meaningful moments that range from expressions of tranquility through to the powerful and most provocative of moments. I always seek to create images that produce both a visual and
emotional connection for the viewer. As those rare, fleeting moments transpire in front of my lens, I tenaciously work to artfully capture them."

"Ropin' 'n Ridin'"
Yes, it's iconic--the shot, the mood, the movement! I love capturing action in silhouette of cowboys and horses! It's SO compelling! This was captured during our Magic of Cowboys - Mescal workshop last week in southern Arizona! The light, the clouds, and the sunsets and sunrises were unbelievable Every...Single...DAY! What a thrill!!!

"An Understanding of their Own"
I love the contrast in this image — the quiet, knowing gaze of the horse in the foreground, and the cowboy in the distance, settled comfortably astride his own steed. I love how one seems to carry the wisdom of being free while the other has the quiet confidence that comes from years spent in partnership with the cowboy.
Different spirits. Different paths. Yet somehow, they belong to the same story.

I wonder what that horse is thinking… and what stories that cowboy could tell.

What do you see when you look at this image? 🤎🐴

"Snout and About"
This lovely collard peccary just strutted it's stuff one afternoon in New Mexico during my Photo Artistry workshops. I loved that the light was conducive to photographing it in High Key style and it make for the most fun, lighthearted image! "Bearly Looking"
Alaska always shows us nature's range of emotion--from predator/prey to wonderfully tender moments with tiny, young cubs exploring their world during their first summer! This beautiful coastal brown bear sow and her cub were keeping watch for other bears that might come onto the scene while the sow hunted for salmon in the shallow waters. (Check out the tiny, yet mighty claws on the cub!) I captured this during my Magic of Alaska workshops this past summer. Shot with my Tamron 150-500mm f/5-6.7 Di III VC VXD Lens for Sony E on my Sony A1.

"What Light Conceals"
Would you be surprised to know that this image was captured at about 1:00pm? Harsh lighting is SO challenging, but when you work with it in the right way, positioning the bear against dark subjects and using the backlight / top-light correctly in combination with the right exposure settings, magic happens! (Our literal Magic of Alaska is shown here! haha). I love this coastal brown bear skulking in the water of Lake Clark National Park---so beautiful!!!!!

"Of Current Interest"
Watching coastal brown bears interact with their environment is truly fascinating--how their sense of smell is roughly 2,100 times more sensitive than a human's and seven times stronger than a bloodhound! Their jaws can clench up to a force of 1200lbs PSI and they can sprint over 35mph. Yet... on this beautiful evening, I photographed this gorgeous sow (female bear) in the most serene, delicate environment while it takes a moment to sense all that is around it. Backlit by the evening sun, all felt pristine, natural, and peaceful. It's amazing how nature has such juxtaposed moments all wrapped up into one beautiful photograph. I was just lucky to be there and witness it! This IS the "Magic of Alaska" -- more than a workshop---an immersion into experiences for the heart, mind and soul...of every creature that joins us!

"Mist the Point"
Ahhh... fog + mist + moody skies + layers + Alaska = My Happy Place! Kachemak Bay offers SUCH dramatic and atmospheric scenes that I simply cannot get enough! No matter how many times I've photographed this area, I can't wait to come back for more, especially on a moody-gloomy-sky day like this one! I captured this during one of our Magic of Alaska workshops this past week! It's a "compression style landscape" shot with a long lens. My favorite way to capture landscapes (and seascapes!). I captured this with my Tamron Americas 150-500mm f/5-6.7 Di III VC VXD Lens for Sony E on my Sony A1.

"Carrot Smokers"
These beautiful Black Oystercatchers were often called "Carrot Smokers" due to their peculiar orange bills! I captured these two gorgeous birds in Alaska this past week during our workshops! I happen to ADORE black oystercatchers because of their personality, colors, and relative rarity (only 10k-18k birds are known to exist worldwide of this species). Contrary to their name, black oystercatchers don't actually feed on oysters. They prefer marine snails, limpets, chitons, and mussels. Interestingly, you can tell a female from a male by looking closely at their eyes; females have tiny flecks across their entire iris, while males have minimal or no flecks! They mate for life and live 15-22 years. They also make incredible subjects for photography on the Alaskan coast! I look for them every time I am here and it's always a thrill to find them! I usually hear their high-pitched, shrill call first--a giveaway that one of these great birds are nearby, hiding among the rocks!

"Cub Scouts"
Our "Magic of Alaska" workshops have continued their notorious Magic streak! We've had a ton of crazy-good moments with Mother Nature this August! In one example--check out these brown bear cubs in Lake Clark Wilderness! The setting was unbelievably perfect--they swam to this tiny floating island and waited for "mom" to bring them salmon she found. The light, the setting, the bears' proximity were all absolutely perfect! We had a blast photographing them and I couldn't stop commenting on how perfect it all was! We were so lucky!!! "360° of Saturation"
The bears were ON today! High gear! Our group had a phenomenal time photographing them! It's amazing to be in a remote place, surrounded by mountains, without another soul nearby! You can hear the bears breathe, grunt, splash, shake (as shown!) and even chew as they catch salmon, fish-after-fish, in this stunningly blue water! MAGICAL! :) THIS is why we call our workshop the "Magic of Alaska!" If you want to get notified of the next one we open, click here: https://www.langellphotography.com/signup
