On this All Souls Day, I thought I would share a marker from Glens Falls Cemetery, which is about a mile from my house.
Duncan James McIntosh was born in Melton, Victoria, Australia in 1857, was naturalized at Lake George, NY in 1905 and passed away on Christmas Day in 1931 at a hospital in Utica, NY.
It seems like he was quite the character -- from the French Foreign Legion soldier of fortune and scholar to living in a shack along the Feeder Canal. Someone cared enough to get a nice stone for his burial place though.
Based on The Post-Star newspaper articles, he was often the victim of crime. In one instance though, the police said he wasn't injured and blamed it on his dementia instead. He was also at the scene of multiple fires while acting as the nightwatchman from his hut along the canal. One time, he served cocoa and doughnuts to the firefighters.
