Sunrise, looking east towards Tierra del Fuego across the Straits of Magellan.

The birds lining the pier are Imperial Cormorants, relatively common to the area around Punta Arenas, but new to me. They were happy to help me greet the sunrise as the cargo ships came and went.

The middle to end of May is a good time to visit Patagonia. Winter is on the way but hasn't yet arrived. The trees in the mountains are vibrant with color and snow is just starting to dust the Andes. The winds can be very variable, either ferocious or dead calm, but the weather is still relatively warm.

And, at the end of a long day of shooting, there is always the national cocktail of Chile to reward you - the Pisco Sour. The Pisco Sour is a tangy, refreshing drink made with pisco brandy, lime or lemon juice, simple syrup, and egg white, topped with Angostura bitters. To make it, you dry shake the pisco, lime, syrup, and egg white to create foam, then shake again with ice before straining into a glass and garnishing with bitters. It's quite addictive.

It was a windy day in Patagonia. Sustained winds of about 40 mph, with gusts up to 60 mph (or so it seemed). At one point in the day I swear both my feet came off the ground at once.

Thanks to Mark Denney for capturing this memory! Hint - if you wear Influencer Red jackets, people will want to take your picture.

I wish I could say it was worth it, but the clouds came down to cover the peaks of Fitz Roy before I could get the shot I wanted. That's pretty typical. Many people never get to see the mountain clearly. But we came back and tried, again and again, and eventually it happened.

Antelope X Canyon, AZ - Noontime light beams illuminate the undulating sandstone waves of a new section of Northern Arizona's most famous slot canyon.

Access to the Antelope X section is on Navajo land, a few miles outside of Page AZ, and you must go with a guide. This section is becoming more popular (unfortunately) - I recommend visiting it soon before the hordes of bus tourons make it impossible to enjoy. If you are a photographer, I recommend the Photo Only tours - they will attempt to control access between the regular tours to enable taking some memorable images

11 AM to 1 PM is the ideal time to visit these canyons - the sun will be high enough in the sky at these times to allow sunbeams to fully pe*****te the canyon and create some amazing light and shadow contrasts.

24-70 mm is an ideal lens for this site. Don't plan to switch lenses once you are in the canyon - the air is quite dusty and it will destroy your camera if you open it down there. The light even at noon will be quite dim. You will have to push the ISO, even with an f/2.8 lens, to get decent exposures. Adobe Lightroom has an amazing denoise algorithm that will allow you to really push the ISO limits - but you will have to shoot in RAW to use it.
