Thysbe Thursday

Hemaris thysbe
(Hummingbird Clearwing) on giant ironweed at the Belle Isle Nature Center last summer. It was a good year for butterflies and moths, or at least for me finding them. The hummingbird moths were zipping around, usually obscured by other plants or flowers so I was happy to get this dorsal view with its wings extended and mostly frozen.

Next Generation 💚

For flyday friday here is a female Hammertail Robber Fly using her ovipositor to lay eggs in this gray-headed coneflower flower. The larva are predators themselves, so either there are eggs or other larvae in the flower for them to eat, or they will hatch and then drop down to the soil to find their prey. She was moving constantly repeatedly piercing the flowerhead with her ovipositor.
Left the id to the Genus common name since I can’t pin down a proper id.

BONUS: It looks like she has some scales left over on her face from her last meal.

Takedown💚

If you EVER need a reminder how badass ambush bugs are, here it is.

I was out at the park and I saw the robber fly first, just chilling under the cone flower. When I got closer (I don’t wear my glasses when I’m photographing) I then saw why it was so still, an ambush bug was making a meal of her! A predator that takes down pretty much anything out there, met its end by the power of stealth and ambush. The robber fly never stood a chance.

I was careful as I was taking photos, because making a predator lose its prey is wrong and irresponsible.

Mite Larva🧡

When I’m out photographing, visual cues like seeing a bit of orange on a green leaf helps me find subjects to photograph. Here we have a tiny orbweaver with two larval mites, I’m guessing velvet mites due to their size. One is significantly larger than the other (3rd image) and I wonder how much carrying around the extra weight impacts their ability to hunt. I also wondered what happens when they molt, do the mites just drop off and stay with the shed? I don’t believe the mite larva are mobile at this stage so now I just have more questions. This is what I love macro, there is always something new to see and learn.

Spider Mom💚

Finally found a wolf spider mom and her little spiderlings while I was doing uvif photography at my friend’s house. It was at night, and she wasn’t sitting still (the spider mom, not my friend) and she was trying to hide in the nooks of the stump. Its so cool how wolf spiders are maternal to carry around their young while they live off their yolk sac until they molt and are big enough to go out on their own.

Blood Moon 🩸🌑

Sometimes I look up 😀. Stayed up to see and document the blood moon because I wanted to see it, and I was up working on some macro gear modifications. I was lucky that the full eclipse took place in a clearing so I could photograph it from my porch.
