There is a certain kind of mother who chooses heirloom portraits.

She saves the dress that was worn for a first birthday.

She keeps the tiny shoes and hospital bracelet tucked safely away in a keepsake box.

She understands that childhood is fleeting, and she wants to fill her home with the memories of it.

These portraits hang in the hallway of a historic Georgian home in Ghent, Norfolk.

My best advice for new moms?

Don’t worry about noise while the baby sleeps.

In those early days it’s easy to feel like the whole house has to pause during nap time. Tiptoeing. Whispering. Holding your breath every time the floor creaks.

But babies are actually really good at learning to sleep through normal life.

This honestly didn’t occur to me until we had Caroline, our second baby. It suddenly hit me that she had been hearing the rhythm of our family the entire time she was in my belly. The conversations, the laughter, the everyday sounds of our home.

Run the dishwasher. Fold laundry. Watch a show. Your baby will learn the rhythm of home.
