Senior year moves faster than anyone warns you it will, and most of the moments that end up mattering most aren't the posed ones, they're the ordinary, blink-and-you'll-miss-it ones happening in the driveway, the kitchen, the car on a random Tuesday.

"He is a typical teenage boy who didn't really even want to have his photos taken... the result? Stunning photographs that really captured my son — she even got his real smile."

That's the fear underneath almost every inquiry I get from a parent: that their kid will just tolerate the session instead of actually being in it. Jen's son wasn't naturally excited to be there, and that's genuinely fine, most seniors aren't. My job isn't to talk someone into performing for a camera. It's to give them enough time and enough ease that the guard comes down on its own, and what's left is worth photographing.

Fall color in Iowa doesn't wait around for anyone's schedule, which is exactly why it's worth thinking about now instead of once the leaves have already turned. I've got a short window in the next month to six weeks where the light and the color line up the way everyone pictures when they imagine a fall senior session, and my calendar for that stretch is already starting to fill.

Your camera roll...

It's kind of become the junk drawer of modern life.

It's holding your grocery list, screenshots of Facebook posts you had to send to your spouse because they "don't do social media," twenty-seven nearly identical sunset photos because you couldn't decide which one to keep, and probably at least one picture of where you parked at the State Fair 2 years ago.

It's also holding some of your family's most important memories.

And that's the part that makes me a little sad.

Not because those memories aren't important.

But because they're sharing space with everything else.

One day you'll want to show someone your senior's portraits. Or your senior will come home from college and you'll want to flip through those images together.

Those moments deserve better than, "Hang on... I know they're in here somewhere."

That's one of the biggest reasons I believe in being a full-service photographer.

Creating the images is only half the job.

The other half is helping you turn them into something you'll actually enjoy—an album that gets passed around the living room, artwork that makes you smile every time you walk by, or heirlooms that tell your family's story long after this season has passed.
