This is my daughter Violet, captured on a wet plate tintype years ago, the very first time I tried this process on a person. Looking back at it now, I still love how it turned out.
There's something about tintype that photographs simply can't replicate. When I first started, I didn't realize just how much light this process demands. I ended up using every studio strobe I owned just to get enough exposure on the plate.
But what I love most is that the plate is never perfect, and neither are we. The swirls, the edges, the little flaws in the emulsion, they make it feel more honest, more human. Just like the people we love, the perfection is in the imperfection. Maybe that's why it captures presence rather than just a likeness.
Funny how a first attempt can still hold up as one of my favorites all these years later.
If you've ever wanted a portrait that feels timeless rather than just another photo on your phone, this is it. I'm currently booking tintype sessions, send me a message or check the link in my bio to grab a spot.
