GAME DAY — NEW BRAUNFELS at SMITHSON VALLEY 🦄🏐
SPRING BRANCH — Tonight has the feel of a district measuring-stick match.
New Braunfels takes a six-match winning streak into Smithson Valley tonight for a 6:30 p.m. showdown between the top two teams in the district race. The Unicorns enter at 23–17 overall and 8–1 in district play, sitting second behind the Rangers. MaxPreps.com
There is also some unfinished business.
The first meeting between these teams on Sept. 15 went the distance, with Smithson Valley escaping Unicorn Gym with a 3–2 win. Since then, New Braunfels has not lost. The Unicorns have answered with six straight victories over MacArthur, Veterans Memorial, Seguin, Lockhart, Lehman and Long Creek. MaxPreps.com
That makes tonight more than just another district match.
It is a chance for New Braunfels to show how much it has improved since that first meeting and to put real pressure on the top of the standings.
The recent formula has been consistent: aggressive serving, steady first contact, strong back-row defense and enough balance offensively to keep opponents from focusing on one hitter.
Shaylie Schaefer continues to lead the attack with 324 kills, while also leading the team with 44 total blocks. In the back row, Hayden Jeffers has been one of the Unicorns’ most reliable pieces with 407 digs and 49 aces. MaxPreps.com
The rankings also reflect the upward trend. New Braunfels moved up five spots in the latest MaxPreps Texas rankings and currently sits No. 29 in Class 5A and No. 10 in the San Antonio area. MaxPreps.com
But rankings and streaks only set the stage.
Tonight is about ex*****on.
New Braunfels will need to handle Smithson Valley’s pressure, stay composed through long rallies, and avoid the stretches that allowed the Rangers to take control in the first meeting. If the Unicorns can stay in system and keep the match balanced at the net, this one has every reason to go deep again.
