"Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain & showed him all the kingdoms of the world & their splendor. "All this I will give you," he said, "if you will bow down & worship me."

We are bombarded with these same temptations every single day. Today's "entertainment" screams to satisfy your lustful desires, no matter the cost. The shows & movies that we watch skew our view on integrity & good vs. bad, encouraging us to root for the underdog or the "perfect couple", even if they're sinning. We're constantly told the lie of "if you make more money & buy more things, you'll be happier." These are examples of Satan's kingdoms & the temporary "splendor" that he offers.

Whether you realize it or not, you're choosing to bow down & worship Satan when you accept these lies & say that sin is ok because it's "the norm". You can't have Jesus as Lord & still live however you want to live. Instead, listen to what Jesus has to say & choose to declare the same thing over your life - "Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God & serve him only.’”

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy & dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness & patience.” – Colossians 3:12

Right before the Apostle Paul says this, he reminds the church in Colossae to “put to death” all of their old & worldly ways of living so that they can put on or “clothe” themselves with their new ways of living in Christ – with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness & patience.

It’s evident that these attributes don’t come naturally. We have to intentionally choose & work towards living these out. In our human nature, we don’t want to admit when we’ve done something wrong. We don’t always want to be kind or compassionate to others. Our responses are often far from gentle or patient.

But God calls us to something more - promising to strengthen us & grow these fruits in us if we are willing to lean in when we feel the conviction stirring inside to change.

In multiple conversations with others over the last month, this verse has come to mind as we talk about identity, worth & who we are in Christ. The phrase that stands out the most is “holy & dearly loved” – in the fact that that’s how God views us. This is so vital to remember as we grow in Christlikeness! We’re still going to fail. We’re going to say the wrong thing, neglect to give grace & be tempted by our sinful desires.

But we don’t have to be defined by those faults – God sees us as his CHOSEN people, HOLY & DEARLY LOVED.

And it’s out of this identity that we’re encouraged & strengthened to live it out.

“By wisdom the Lord laid the earth’s foundations, by understanding he set the heavens in place; by his knowledge the watery depths were divided, & the clouds let drop the dew.” – Proverbs 3:19-20

As I grow in appreciation for God’s creation, I’m left in awe. Awe of his detailed work. Awe of its vastness. Awe of his creativity. Awe of how perfect & precise he made everything!

We so often forget that God is the Creator, & therefore in control, of all that surrounds us. I remember last summer when my husband & I went on a backpacking trip in the Boundary Waters, I struggled to fall asleep at night. I was afraid of a bear attacking our tent while we slept, a storm rolling through, or literally anything else that could possibly happen. I had to constantly remind myself that God is just as much in control in the wilderness as he is when I’m at home.

The same holds true for all aspects of our life. In our finances, in our health, in the giving & taking of life, in softening our loved ones hearts – all of it.

So who am I to question the Lord, the Creator of all things?

I’m reminded of the Lord’s response to Job in Job 38, after Job had experienced endless grief & suffering. “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched the measuring line across it? On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone – while the morning stars sang together & the angels shouted for joy?” (v. 4-7). God continues all throughout chapter 38 in describing all he’s done as Lord & Creator.

God is infinite, while we’re finite. Where we experience limitations, he has endless power, grace, love, knowledge, wisdom & ability. NOTHING is too hard for the Lord (Genesis 18:14).

Who am I to question God’s purposes & plans for my life when he’s clearly showed me throughout all of his creation that he does detailed, intentional & perfect work?

“But who are you, a human being, to talk back to God? Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it, ‘Why did you make me like this?’ Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for special purposes & some for common use?” – Romans 9:20-21

Even when we struggle to understand his ways, we’re called to trust. I don’t know what tomorrow holds, but I know who holds tomorrow.

In a recent message at church, our Pastor described a hard but simple reality of life. When we face a problem, our desire is to have an easy, clear & straight-line path from problem to solution.➡️ But the reality is that our journey through trials are far different than that. Instead, the path we walk is often confusing, unclear & chaotic – taking one step forward, just to take two steps back.↩️

We think “Why would God allow the path to be uncertain & difficult? Why can’t it just be easy?” The honest answer is this: When your life is easy & comfortable, you have no reason to 1) trust & depend on God & 2) change to be transformed into Christlikeness.

James, the half-brother of Jesus, calls the person who perseveres under trial BLESSED. In other words, the person who trusts God even without clarity. The person who allows God to transform their heart in the midst of suffering. That person is blessed, praiseworthy & approved by God.

He goes on to say, “having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.” The CROWN OF LIFE 👑 – Wow. All the pain, all the suffering, all the tears… they’ll be worth it. Because we’re promised the crown of life - an eternity with the God who loves & who wipes away every tear.

Blessed are YOU who persevere, trust in God's plan & allow him to grow you more into his image.
