Perfect Two Harbors

The other day I found myself in Two Harbors under some truly perfect conditions. The harbor was calm, the light was just right, and as I sent the drone out over the water, the reflection below looked almost like a mirror.

As photographers, we spend a lot of time chasing the right weather, the right light, and the right moment. Every once in a while, though, nature does all the work and simply presents perfection right in front of you.

Aurora Alert!

The next few nights could bring some excellent opportunities to see the Northern Lights across Minnesota! If you're hoping to catch the show, keep an eye on your favorite aurora apps and space weather forecasts to follow conditions in real time.

The challenge? The cloud forecast isn't looking particularly cooperative at the moment. As every aurora chaser knows, sometimes the hardest part isn't finding the lights—it's finding a clear patch of sky!

Until then, here's a look back at an unforgettable display from last November, when the Northern Lights danced above Split Rock Lighthouse. Moments like these remind us why it's always worth checking the sky.

Gunflint Moose!

Today, I headed up the Gunflint Trail in search of moose. It had been quite awhile since I’d last seen one, so half the excitement was simply the possibility of the adventure itself.

After a slow morning, I was just about ready to give up. As I pulled into my final spot of the day, I looked out across the water and spotted this incredible bull feeding in the lake.

For the next 45 minutes, I got to quietly watch one of the true giants of the Northwoods doing its thing. Moments like this are why I keep getting up before sunrise and carrying a camera into the woods.

Sometimes the best encounters happen right when you think the day is over.

Stewart Trail Fire

On Friday, May 15, 2026, what started as a small wildfire near Betty’s Pies quickly grew into something much bigger. Fueled by strong winds, the Stewart Trail Fire spread rapidly along the North Shore toward the Silver Cliff Tunnel area.

Watching smoke rise above the cliffs and forest was a sobering reminder of how quickly things can change along Lake Superior. But it was also a reminder of just how incredible our emergency responders are. Fire crews, aircraft, helicopters, and agencies from across the region responded immediately, building fire breaks and attacking the fire from the ground and air. Because of their fast work, many homes were saved and the fire was fully contained by Sunday, May 17th.

I know several people personally who were impacted by this fire, and many families are now working through the difficult process of recovery.

Happy Days!

Posting something a little different tonight.

Today was my oldest daughter’s last day of high school, and my wife and I couldn’t be more proud of the young woman she has become. She has faced and overcome so much along the way, including open heart surgery, and through it all she has shown incredible strength, determination, and heart.

This fall she begins a new adventure at Northern Michigan University, and we are so excited to see where life takes her next.

With graduation, family gatherings, and a few celebrations ahead, I’ll be taking a short break from social media for a few days to soak in this milestone and enjoy the moment with family.

Northwoods Aurora

On May 15th, a friend and I headed into the Northwoods hoping to photograph the Milky Way, but the aurora forecast was looking too good to ignore. So we changed plans and chased the lights instead.

It turned out to be the right call.

Waves of green and magenta filled the sky and poured across the calm water below, creating one of my favorite kinds of scenes to photograph — an aurora reflection. There’s just something incredible about watching the entire landscape glow under the northern lights.

Nights like this are why I never mind changing the plan.

Just the Start

When I was planning my last night under the stars, I kept coming back to this location. Every time I scouted it, I found myself wondering if the Milky Way would line up perfectly above the tree line the way I imagined it.

A few weeks later, standing on the shoreline between midnight and 3:00 AM, that vision finally came together. The Milky Way stretched across the sky exactly as I had hoped — and as an added bonus, a soft glow of airglow drifted across the horizon.

Moments like this are why I keep chasing dark skies. This was just the start.

As the Night Goes By

One of my favorite things about astrophotography is watching the Milky Way slowly glide across the night sky as the hours pass and dawn begins to creep over the horizon. There’s something peaceful about sitting beneath the stars, listening to the waves of Lake Superior, and watching the night slowly give way to morning over Split Rock Lighthouse.

Beneath the Northern Sky

Over the last few years, I’ve really fallen in love with Lake Superior at night. There’s something about the vastness of the lake paired with the endless expanse of the stars that keeps drawing me back. Together, they create a perfect sense of wonder, solitude, and hope.
