The best moments in a portrait session almost never happen when everyone's still.

They happen when the kid forgets I'm there.

When they look up at their mom for exactly one second and their whole face changes.

When something across the room catches their eye and their expression does that thing....that completely unrepeatable thing that you've been trying to describe to people for months.

That's the chapter I'm chasing.

This precious boy and his parents visited the studio last week, and I'm so glad I got to meet them!

They are from South Korea, and living here attending the University of Alabama. It's custom in South Korea to document and celebrate a baby's 100 days of birth. And this little fella did so incredibly well for his very first photo shoot ever! He was an absolute doll. (I'm kind of obsessed with his hair!! 😍)

It was such an honor to be able to capture this special time for his family.

This is a full session (not a mini!) at my studio in Northport, with 5 high-resolution digital images included, totally free.

Something nobody tells you about photographing families:

The most important part of my job happens before I ever pick up my camera.

I'm reading the room. Is mom tense? Is the toddler overstimulated? Is dad doing the "I don't know what to do with my hands" thing?

My whole job is to create a space where your family can actually relax and just be together. Because that's when the genuine moments happen.

The glances. The giggles. The way your little one reaches for you without even thinking about it. The playful moments.

What's one thing you wish you'd photographed more when your kids were little?

I ask because I hear it from moms all the time: "I can't believe how fast it went. I wish I had more pictures of that season."

You can't go back. But you can capture where you are right now.

If I had a dollar for every mom who texted me "Fair warning, my kids may not cooperate" before their session, I'd have a lot of dollars.

Here's what I need you to hear: kids being kids is not a problem. It is literally the whole point.

I photographed a three-year-old recently who had zero interest in standing still. She was running, exploring, completely in her own world. Did I get a few shots of her actually looking at the camera? Yes. But the images that made her mama stop scrolling? The ones where she was just herself.

Wild kids give me action and belly laughs.
Shy kids give me the sweetest snuggle shots.
Silly kids? Pure gold.

Your only job before we start is to take one slow breath and let go of the idea that your kids have to perform. They don't.

Something I've been sitting with lately, and wanted to share with you.

Motherhood is a calling. A real one. Not a consolation prize, not a secondary chapter. A sacred, weighty, beautiful calling.

I wrote about it over on the blog this week, and it came straight from the heart. If you're in a season where the days feel long and the comparison thoughts get loud... I wrote this for you. Don't listen to what the world tries to scream at you: that you are somehow missing out on life because you are a mother; that children are an inconvenience and a nuisance.

There's something about graduation season that gets me every time. 🎓

The pre-K graduate who's suddenly too big for the classroom they cried leaving on day one. The high school senior who somehow went from kindergarten photos to cap and gown in what felt like a weekend. The UA graduate who showed up, figured it out, and made it happen.

It's a bittersweet season, one marked with excitement and a sense of accomplishment, but also a little sadness as one chapter ends, and another begins.

Every single one of those moments deserves to be remembered, not just in your mind, but somewhere you can hold onto.

Congratulations to all the graduates this season! You've earned every bit of this. 🤍
