GRAND LAKE FISHING REPORT: THREE SPECIES WORTH WATCHING!

Heading to Grand Lake this weekend?

The October 30 Oklahoma fishing report rates three popular species FAIR.

Largemouth bass: Crankbaits, soft plastics and spinnerbaits around docks, brush and shorelines.

Blue catfish: Cut bait and shad around the main lake, river channel and below the dam.

White crappie: Hair jigs and regular jigs around brush and docks.

ODWC reported stained water, a temperature of 67°F and a lake elevation near normal.

The fishing isn't rated GOOD across the board, but the report gives anglers several options depending on which species they're targeting.

MCGEE CREEK: BASS AND CATFISH ARE BOTH BITING!

The latest Oklahoma fishing report has encouraging news for McGee Creek anglers.

According to ODWC's October 30 report, largemouth and spotted bass fishing is rated GOOD.

Reported productive presentations include crankbaits, jerkbaits, inline spinnerbaits and jigs around points, rocks, riprap and standing timber.

Catfish anglers are also seeing good conditions.

Channel and flathead catfish fishing is rated GOOD, with cut bait, live bait, shrimp and worms among the reported options.

One thing to watch before launching: McGee Creek was listed approximately 6 feet below normal and falling.

Check current lake levels and ramp conditions before making the trip.

WISTER LAKE CRAPPIE FISHING IS LOOKING GOOD!

Good news for southeast Oklahoma crappie anglers!

The October 30 Oklahoma fishing report rates white crappie fishing at Wister Lake GOOD.

According to ODWC, anglers are catching crappie on jigs and minnows around brush structure.

The report also lists freshwater drum fishing as GOOD and bluegill fishing as FAIR.

Water conditions at the time of the report:
- Water temperature: 72°F
- Water clarity: Stained
- Lake elevation: Approximately 3 feet below normal
If you're heading to Wister this weekend, brush is a good place to start looking.

If you're planning to fish Kaw Lake from shore, the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation identifies several places worth checking.

According to ODWC's crappie fishing guide, some of the better bank-access areas include:

Washunga Bay

Pioneer Park

Little Beaver

The guide specifically recommends looking around riprap and gravel banks.

For tackle, ODWC suggests small soft plastics on jigheads ranging from 1/16 to 1/4 ounce.

Live minnows under a float are another option.

For boat anglers, the guide also identifies the Washunga and Highway 11 bridge areas, along with flooded timber near Sarge Creek.

These are established fishing locations, not a guarantee that crappie are biting there today.

Before heading out, check current lake levels and access conditions.

BLUEGILL, REDEAR, OR GREEN SUNFISH — CAN YOU TELL THE DIFFERENCE?

Oklahoma has several sunfish species that anglers often group together as perch.

But there are some useful identification clues.

BLUEGILL

Look for a small mouth, a dark ear flap, and a black spot near the rear of the dorsal fin.

REDEAR SUNFISH

Often called shellcrackers. Look for a red or orange border around the dark ear flap. They generally lack the bluegill's black dorsal-fin spot.

GREEN SUNFISH

These typically have a larger mouth and blue-green markings around the cheeks.

The next time you catch a sunfish, take a closer look at the ear flap, mouth, and dorsal fin.

We've got a sunfish from our OFA archives pictured here. Our catalog identifies it as bluegill-type, but the exact species hasn't been confirmed.

OKLAHOMA FISHING ACCESS: THREE PLACES WORTH KNOWING ABOUT!

Not every Oklahoma angler can easily navigate steep banks, loose rocks, or long walks to the water.

Here are three fishing locations with access features identified by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation.

CLAREMORE LAKE

A wheelchair-accessible fishing pier is located near the Lake Ranger's office. Claremore also has an enclosed, heated fishing dock with separate fees and operating hours.

OOLOGAH LAKE

ODWC identifies an easy-access fishing dock at Red Bud Bay Marina.

KAW LAKE

The concrete walkway along the spillway is listed as accessible, and several public-use areas provide relatively easy access to the shoreline.

One important reminder: parking, pathways, water levels, and facility conditions can change. Call ahead to make sure a particular location meets your needs.
