Nita Larkins owns clothes bold enough to enter a room before she does. She calls them a hiding place—a curious admission from a woman whose life has repeatedly required courage without spectacle. She has learned to rebuild when plans collapse, to do the work herself, and, more recently, to question how much authority other people’s opinions deserve.

The contradiction is striking: a woman accustomed to reinvention now longs less for another beginning than for enough time to remain where she is. She notices that time differently now, especially beside a husband in his eighties. Even the lines around her eyes have become evidence rather than flaws. In one portrait, she chose glamour; her husband preferred the simplest image—black turtleneck, hat, jeans. Perhaps he recognized the woman beneath all that magnificent clothing before she fully did.
