It was a little wet out this morning, but the dirt is good! Gotta get it while it lasts.

Last weekend we finally were able to backpack Havasupai after a 4 year wait since we got our permit due to covid.

We definitely had a blast in the canyon with the best of company. The waterfalls are quite magnificent and plenty. We probably hiked between 35-40 miles over the 4 days. It was quite hot at the bottom of the Gram Cram so we hiked the 10 miles out of there around 2am to beat the heat, and the Milky Way was extremely visible for the first couple hours of our hike. That was the coolest hiking experience I’ve ever had. It’s definitely hard getting in and out of but absolutely worth it.

was amazing pushing herself on the hike up the canyon walls. did great coming back from an active knee injury. is just the best. was so fast she’s celebrating Christmas already.

The first night shot I used my flashlight to light up the canyon walls since it was so dark down there while leaving the shutter open. The picture consists of about 9 photos stacked together to reduce noise and grain, but all the pictures were taken in the same place. The Grand Canyon and Michigan’s upper peninsula are the best places in the continental US to see the stars if you ever get a chance.

Here’s one from September of shark fin cove that I never posted. It was hard to get this shot due to so many other photographers using headlamps on the beach.

Swipe 👉 for the full pano. We recently did 26ish miles at Hetch Hetchy in Yosemite. We turned around at about the halfway mark due to many miles of pushing through knee deep snow. Definitely the hardest hiking I’ve ever done, but this place was quite grandiose.

Great times with friends.

I took some pics at shark fin cove yesterday. This was probably the last time of the season to get the Milky Way vertical from this spot. The California coast is pretty neat.

I recently built a new lithium battery bank from scratch for the van. It is a 310 amp hour 12 volt lifepo4 battery that is self temperature regulating.
There are heaters that turn on when it gets below freezing and a fan that turns on if it gets above 100 so the batteries can charge properly. This batter is 1/3 the weight and 1/2 the physical size of our last battery bank but with about 40 more useable amp hours. The smart shunt is super awesome letting us see the voltage on our phones through Bluetooth.

So far this battery hasn’t dipped below 70% even with very heavy inverter usage.

Here’s another Milky Way shot from some lava fields in Hawaii. I love taking Milky Way pictures. It’s definitely a challenge to get good quality low noise crisp shots. It takes hours to take the photos and usually hours to edit them afterwards, and usually I have to get up at some random time at night to get the lowest light pollution and positioning.

Luckily there’s an app called that helps me plan out my night shots. I only had a 30 minute window between the moon setting and the sun rising to get this picture, and PhotoPills helped me plan what time I needed to wake up and where in the sky the Milky Way will be.

This is not sponsored by PhotoPills at all. This app is just super helpful for any night time photos you’re trying to take.

Here’s one of the only views of the Na Pali coast that we saw in Kauai. Turns out it’s pretty hard to get permits to hike/backpack the kalalau trail. One day we’ll be camping at the beach down there.
