My Christmas Story....

Sir Giuseppe...
Hung high in the tree, overseeing Christmas within my home.
Ever vigilant & alert... tending watch through the night!
Ready at the hand for any mischievous antics.

I was awoken at 2:22 am on Christmas morning. Strange noises were emitting from my living room...
faint, but still audible enough to wake me.
I lay there, listening closely to the sounds.
Sounds that bore a resemblance
to the fighting of a war.
The muffled booms of canons and guns,
a quiet tinkling of metal on metal,
the soft rhythm of horse hooves galloping
and hushed cries of pain and agony.
Surly, there must be a reasonable explanation.

It was so cold outside of the covers,
that I didn't want to move,
but I had to go investigate.
So, I silently slipped out of bed, donned my robe and slippers and gently opened my door.

Now mind you...
it was just enough to take a peek.
I peered out through the crack and to my amazement,
what did I see?

Now... I'm sure you are all thinking that I saw a jolly fat man with rosy red cheeks and a red furry suit, placing presents beneath my tree.

But ohhh...
let me tell you....
It Definitely Wasn't St. Nick!!

My eyes widened at the sight, my mouth fell open in disbelief!
I just couldn't believe what I saw!
For it was exactly as I had imagined, as I layed in my bed, listening.
I pegged all the sounds just right!
A miniature war was in full swing and it was all taking place around my Christmas Tree!!

An army of Nutcracker Soldiers, standing tall and gallant ....
fighting against the evil Christmas Gnomes!
Sir Giuseppe was leading the charge!
Barking out orders and commands,
diligently protecting, with honor...
all the other ornaments
that were still clinging to my tree

You see..
the gnomes were trying to steal them!
Sneaking in and climbing up the tree,
tugging them off of their hangers
and sending them tumbling
to the floor beneath.
Several of them were injured and a few broken from the fall.
The Snowmen Nutcrackers charged on in to sn**ch them from the gnomes, taking them to a safe place
underneath the rocking chair.
Then, the Toy-Shoppe Nutcrackers
quickly moved in to start repairs!
For no-one, shall parish on this day!

The Knights were brave and fierce,
battling those nasty gnomes.
Swords were flailing high and low,
slashing at the branches in attempts to dethrone the gnomes.
Mini cannonballs sailing through the air,
launched high into the tree, with cries of pain echoing back.
Several gnomes fell, crashing to the floor.
They were swiftly surrounded by Horses
rearing, striking and kicking... pummeling the gnomes!

Leaning against the door to get a better view, my hand slipped
and the door flew open.
Banging against wall,
disrupting the battle before me.
Everyone froze in mid stride! The gnomes vanished, disappearing in a flash.
The nutcrackers and horses frozen in place, remained still and lifeless.
They had all just been seen and didn't know what else to do

Sir Giuseppe..
still hanging high in the tree, seemed to be beaming with pride!
Proud of all, within his troops, for they had fought valiantly
and bravely stood their ground!
Protecting all that was my Christmas from those nasty, pesky,
Lil Christmas Gnomes!

Introducing "Zephyr"!
I chose this name because "Zephyr" means “a gentle breeze”, so I thought it would be a great name for a bird that can fly so gracefully.
There has been a Cooper's Hawk nest high up in my neighbor's Eucalyptus tree and we have all had to deal with the parents dive-bombing us for several months now. Apparently, they only had 1 offspring, A few weeks ago the youngin got out of the nest and down on the ground. It is now residing in the trees within my wash. I have several birdbaths and watering dishes out there, not to mention a plethora of wildlife to feed upon. The parents come to sit with him and they still dive-bomb me, I have been smacked in the head many times by their wings and just the other day, one of them actually grazed it's claws on my scalp and lifted up my hair. They are pretty quiet when they are gliding along and then you hear the swoosh of it's powerful wings. It didn't hurt me but I sure did cuss it out. Having them so close to my house now, makes for a great photo opportunity.
