The OG Bug Lady I’m a wildlife biologist who has been creating insect and wildlife art for over 30 years, obsessed with tiny arthropods since I can remember.

I got my nickname from the media back in the early 2000s because I painted giant insects on huge canvases. My artwork is inspired by my love of animals, nature, conservation, the Pop Art movement, mid-century modern design, bold color and a desire to create an appreciation for the most unloved of earth’s beneficial creatures. I want to make people say, "What a beautiful creature!" and gain an inte

I was digging and planting pollinator plants in the flower box over the tiny house trailer, and I came across this cute little guy…possibly Dynastes sp. (Hercules and Rhinoceros beetle genus, some of my favorite beetles!) It’s too big to be a Japanese beetle or other scarab, plus this is a brand new bed with decaying organic material in it.

They found pesticides in almost every milkweed sample tested from retail nurseries. Butterfly lovers think they are doing the right thing for these amazing insects by planting milkweed in their yards, but they are unknowingly hurting them more (especially in Florida). The butterfly highway has become toxic. It's better not to plant them at all. Not mowing and allowing wildflowers to grow is a better option.

Pesticides, habitat loss and climate change have taken their toll on the beloved insects. But the experts working with them still find hope for their future
