We’re almost out of summer, which means fall senior sessions are right around the corner!

The rain moved in right after the ceremony. You could hear the thunder rolling and see lightning in the distance.

We knew we had a very small window, so we got to work.

Family photos. Bridal party portraits. Bride and groom.

We managed to squeeze what normally would have been nearly an hour of photos into about 10 very fast minutes before the rain started coming down.

And this crew? They handled every second of it with ease.

Sometimes wedding days don’t go exactly as planned, but that’s part of the magic. And I’ll take a crew that can roll with it like this any day.

And golden hour after a good rain? There is truly nothing like it.

The emotions that come with a wedding day are something incredible to witness.

I get to watch two people completely in love promise forever to each other. I get to watch best friends see their person gain a best friend for life. I get to watch parents look at their kids and realize they have found the kind of love they always hoped they would.

The quiet moments. The shaky hands. The deep breaths. The tears that start before anyone even says a word. The laughter that comes right in the middle of all of it.

I get a front row seat to some of the most emotional moments in people's lives.

And the best part about being the photographer?

I get to hide my own tears behind the lens.

Happy National Photography Day.

A little history for you because today is about so much more than pretty pictures.

August 19 was chosen to celebrate photography because on this day in 1839, the daguerreotype process developed by Louis Daguerre was officially presented to the public in France. It became one of the first practical forms of photography and helped change the way we could preserve people, places and moments forever.

Think about that. Photography has been part of our history for nearly 200 years.

Cameras have changed. The way we edit has changed. The way we share photographs has definitely changed. But the reason photographs matter really hasn’t.

We take pictures because life moves.

People grow up. Families change. Babies become kids. Kids become adults. People fall in love. We lose people we love. Homes change. Traditions change. Ordinary days become the days we wish we could go back to.

And somehow, a photograph lets us keep a little piece of it.

I’ve spent more than a decade behind a camera, and I think that’s what I love most about this job. I get to create beautiful images, but more importantly, I get to document people’s lives. I’ve watched couples become families, babies grow up, seniors graduate and families come back to me year after year.

One day, the photographs we’re taking right now will be someone’s history.

So today, print the photos. Take the picture even if everything isn’t perfect. Get in the frame. Document the ordinary days too.
