As my drone climbed into the crisp New Zealand sky, I was convinced the dramatic landscape in front of me was the star of the show. Rugged hills rolled toward the horizon, framed by native bush and endless shades of green. The view seemed perfect, and I focused my camera on every detail.
Then I turned around.
Behind me was something even more extraordinary—Inferno Crater Lake. Nestled deep within the volcanic landscape, the lake glowed with an almost unreal turquoise color, as if illuminated from within. Wisps of steam drifted from the earth around it, carrying the faint sulfur scent of New Zealand’s geothermal heart. The only sounds were the distant calls of native birds and the gentle hiss of steam escaping from hidden vents. The contrast between the vivid blue-green water and the rugged terrain surrounding it was breathtaking.
At that moment, I was reminded of an important lesson. Sometimes we become so focused on the obvious attraction in front of us that we miss something even more remarkable nearby. Taking a moment to stop, turn around, and look from a different perspective can reveal unexpected beauty. That day in New Zealand, the view I almost overlooked became one of the most memorable sights of the entire journey. 🇳🇿

Have you ever started a journey without realizing the best was yet to come?
Piha Beach in New Zealand was our first official stop, and I couldn't have imagined a more dramatic beginning. Standing on the black volcanic sand, I listened to the roar of the Tasman Sea as waves crashed against the shoreline. The iconic Lion Rock rose from the water like a silent guardian, while rugged cliffs framed the coast.
I launched my drone into the cool morning air and watched the landscape unfold from above. The contrast between the dark sand and brilliant blue ocean was stunning. White waves traced patterns along the shore, and the coastline stretched into the distance, revealing hidden coves and rocky headlands. Every direction offered another incredible view.
For a few minutes, I forgot about camera settings and simply admired the beauty on my screen. It felt wild, remote, and untouched. As I recorded sweeping passes over the beach, I wondered if this might be the highlight of the trip.
I couldn't have been more wrong.
In the days ahead, New Zealand revealed soaring mountains, crystal-clear lakes, glaciers, and waterfalls beyond anything I had imagined. Yet Piha remains unforgettable because it was where the adventure began. Looking back at that drone footage today, I remember the excitement of that first stop—and how little I knew about the amazing scenes still to come.

Frying Pan Lake (Waimangu Cauldron) in New Zealand is the world’s largest hot spring, located in the Waimangu Volcanic Rift Valley near Rotorua, formed after the 1886 eruption of Mount Tarawera. It’s known for its steaming, acidic, and hot water (averaging 50-60°C or 122-140°F), making swimming impossible, but it’s a major geothermal attraction accessible via the Waimangu Trail, offering stunning views of its unique landscape.

Certainly a different look for my photography.
The dark reddish-orange coloration of rocks in New Zealand is primarily caused by the oxidation of ferromagnesium minerals and the presence of iron oxide minerals (such as hematite) within the stone.
Trying to see some things in a different way.
