Cubs of the year in Cades cove this weekend! These two were hanging out in a tree most of the morning while their sibling stayed with mom. Eventually, mom came back to get them from the tree and all three cubs went in their way.

Sometimes you want to take photographs, and sometimes it’s best to just watch and enjoy the moment. A driver (Katie Hanke Fenn) snapped this picture of and me riding bikes in Cades cove. We rode around a curve, and this bear was standing in the road. We stopped to give the bear space and waited while the bear slowly walked down the road.

One of the best ways to enjoy the park more is to find ways to get out of your car. Whether it’s walking, hiking or biking, you’re more likely to see wildlife plus you don’t have to sit in traffic!

Walnuts were the treat of choice this weekend in Cades Cove! Bears usually eat walnuts the following spring which gives the hard outer layers of walnuts time to soften over winter. This bear was beside the road cracking the walnuts.

Being a mom to 3 little ones that constantly wander off is difficult! On Saturday, this mother bear jumped to sniff the air to confirm all three cubs were ok. Then she casually went back to eating.

Spring cubs in Cades Cove! While everyone’s paying attention to some yearlings, these spring cubs were sneaking around the corner avoiding the crowds. So fun to see, especially when we had them mostly to ourselves!

This yearling from Saturday was dangling its leg off this limb while it rained. It’s sinking and mom were on the ground just below the tree.

The bears overall were very active in the afternoons in the cove over the weekend. We saw 16 bears on Saturday, 21 Bears on Sunday, and 6 bears Monday before noon. The spring cubs are also starting to come out while the yearlings are causing mayhem throughout the loop. Overall, a very fun weekend with lots of videos and photos to share!

Yesterday right at sunset, this mother bear brought out her cubs of the year! The rain kept most people out of the cove, but it was actually a great day for bears. 16 total bears and didn’t even make the entire loop.

Cades Cove has had a fantastic cub year! While there’s usually several sets of cubs, the cubs were very visible earlier in the year due to the cicada hatch.
