Thought this bear was going to cross the creek across a log. Had the shot all centered and focused, she hopped on the log, then hopped off and walked the other way… Still managed to get video of her crossing the creek.

FOR HIRE: Expert Tree Trimmers

Only works for cherry trees though, and maybe oaks later in the year.

More Cades Cove Cherry Season vibes! When do you think the best time to see bears is?

The ever elusive bear in a creek shot! This bear briefly came down from her cherry feast for a drink of water, then went back up another cherry tree to continue eating.

One of my favorite times to catch bears in Cades Cove is cherry season. Its timing can vary from around the last week of July to the first couple of weeks of August, and some years have more cherries than others. If you hit a good cherry season though, it’s easy to see double digit bears in a single day!

Have you seen a bear with better false eyes than this one? They make this bear stand out and easier to identify in the future.

This video is from cherry season in 2024 which was an incredible year for cherries in the cove. Fingers crossed for a decent cherry season this year!

When Mom decides she’s ready to move, you better be moving!

This is from a few years back. While it doesn’t happen every year, cherry season can be one of the best times to spot bears. Cherries typically ripen in the cove from late July through early August, and since wild cherries typically grow along roads and fence rows, the food source is in a visible location for you to see bears. 2024 was a bumper crop year while 2025 had very few berries. Hopefully the trees had a year to rest, and we’ll get a decent cherry season this year.

Early summer is the best season to see the Smokies! Bears, Fireflies and flowers are everywhere!

A hillside of synchronous fireflies! This year has been more of an experiment of trying to find new (to me) synchronous firefly locations. We found new populations of clue ghost and synchronous both inside the Smokies and outside the park. Even stumbled up on my first railroad worms (a glow worm) and dismalites, a gnat larvae that also glows.

Anyone have suggestions on the best way to keep track of locations and dates for these sightings for future reference?

Deer meets bears! This deer was eating near where this mother bear and her cubs were napping in a tree. When the bears came down, mother bear made a half-hearted attempt to chase the deer down. Seemed like she was only interested in catching the deer if it was an easy catch. After that, the deer and bears walked through the field keeping an eye on one another. Towards the end of the video, something spooks both the deer and the bear, assuming a male bear was close. Mother bear took her cubs into the woods and the deer ran the opposite direction ending the unique encounter.
