It has been an amazing year once again for the birds of the Smoky Mountains. Always a favorite, the Red Crossbills have been raising their young in and around Cades Cove. Their unique beak design allows them to pry into and apply fulcrum type pressure inside a pine cone and pop the seed into their mouths. The adult male, shown above, is a reddish orange. The female of the same species is a greenish olive color.
