This year I will celebrate my 48th year as a professional photographer. This road has always been a gift from God, and it has been such a blessing that I was able to share this gift with so many people. My wife, Janice, was there from the very beginning and stood by my side as the business grew. The greatest joy of my career was sharing my love of photography with both my children, Jenna and Jonathan, as they grew up with the business. This amazing journey has taken me on photography assignments to locations around the world, places that I would never have dreamed of visiting.
The friendships that I have developed with my fellow photographers is something that I cherish as we were able to share the love of photography as an art.
I truly love my career as a photographer, but I have decided to retire this year.
I could have retired years ago but I loved working with Jonathan and my entire crew, so I decided to stay around and venture into school portrait photography since we were given that opportunity. As I said previously, being able to spend time and work with Jonathan was one of the greatest joys of continuing to work. As he recently graduated with a criminology degree, he will be moving on to follow his own path and I don’t want to stand in his way of his dream. Another big factor in taking this step was the closure of Wayfarers Chapel last year; without the weddings that we photographed at the chapel, we would have to double the number of schools that we currently photograph, thus jeopardizing the quality time, effort and attention we spend with each senior and their experience with us. As a professional photographer, I didn’t want to sacrifice our time, and quality of our work that would have come with adding more schools. We take great pride knowing that we took the time to talk with the students; got to know them and connect with them, making their experience in the studio unforgettable.
I always said when my dream career becomes a “JOB” I know that it was time to move on to my next grand adventure. As I grappled with the decision to finally retire, I have had a few people tell me that I should sell the business rather than close, but my business name is me, my name, Joey Ikemoto Photography. We have 5-star rating on Google, Wedding Wire and The Knot as well as a 4.8 on Yelp and I don’t want the possibility of someone damaging our very hard-earned reputation. Proverbs 22:1 In fact, if any of our past clients and friends could give us a farewell review, I would appreciate it!
The studio will be open until I find a tenant to lease my building. If you know of anyone looking for an amazing retail space in Downtown Torrance, please let us know! And until then, our studio is still fully functional and open for studio portraits.
It has been an honor to be able to be a part of this community and your families’ lives. Again, I want to thank you all for your friendship and support throughout all these wonderful years as I move on to this next phase in life.
