The newborn bubble is such a strange and beautiful pocket of time where somehow the days feel incredibly long, but the weeks disappear before you even realize they’ve passed. Every week is appreciated with little milestones that contribute to your baby becoming more and more whole, and the outside world keeps moving, but for a little while, yours becomes very small. It’s feeding and rocking and contact naps, tiny fingers grabbing at your hair, the sweet sweet smell of their head, and spending hours just staring at this little person you somehow made who still doesn’t quite feel real.
You lose track of what day it is. There are bottles on the counter, laundry that has been sitting in the dryer for days, cold cups of coffee everywhere, and texts you fully intended to answer (I’m still not sure I got to all mine 6 months later 🫠). You’re exhausted in a way that’s hard to explain, probably a little overwhelmed, and somehow already nostalgic for something you’re still right in the middle of.
I think that’s the strangest part of the newborn bubble… you know how temporary it is while you’re living it. You’re holding this tiny body against your chest at 2 a.m., wishing more than anything that they would just fall asleep, while another part of you is trying desperately to memorize exactly how they feel in your arms because you know there will be a night when they don’t need you like this anymore.
For a little while, life asks you to slow down whether you’re good at slowing down or not. The plans can wait and the house can be messy. The rest of the world feels a little farther away. Your entire existence revolves around this tiny person and figuring out who they are while also figuring out who you are now that they’re here.
And then slowly, without really noticing it happening, the bubble starts to open. They sleep a little longer, their newborn clothes stop fitting, and you leave the house a little more. Life starts finding its rhythm again, and suddenly you realize those hazy, exhausting days that felt like they might last forever are already behind you.
This all makes the newborn bubble so so beautiful.
