WOMEN OF KANSAS
Jane Grant, born on this day in 1892, was raised in Girard. In her later teen years, she traveled to New York to pursue a career singing. After arriving in New York, she became a journalist working for The New York Times.

During WWI, she joined the American Red Cross. With her musical talents, Grant entertained soldiers during shows in Paris and at camps. After the war ended, she returned to journalism.

Grant and her first husband Harold Ross founded The New Yorker magazine in 1925.

Today in Kansas history, Boston Corbett (the man credited with killing John Wilkes Booth) escaped from the Topeka Insane Asylum, as it was then known.

The year before, while working at the Kansas Statehouse, Corbett thought Capitol workmen were talking about him, or making fun of him. He lost his temper, pulling a knife and then a revolver on the men. They ran for safety, and Corbett went to his position as doorkeeper of the House Chambers, still carrying the revolver.

When police arrived, Corbett was arrested and taken to the City Jail. The next morning, a judge ordered Corbett to be admitted to the state hospital.

The horse Corbett stole was later found in Wilson County, Kansas - but Corbett vanished into history.

Last night, as I was walking through Historic Topeka Cemetery, the light hit Bishop Thomas Vail's headstone just right, really showing off its design on top.

Vail was the first Episcopal bishop in Kansas.

I'm always humbled when visiting Leavenworth National Cemetery. Particularly on Memorial Day weekend, when each grave is marked with a flag. There are over 30,000 individuals buried at the cemetery.

NEW PRINT DROP!

I’ve always loved vintage western graphics because they weren’t subtle. They're bold. Designing this piece, I was inspired by Dodge City's legendary history – its mix of grit, myth, and all Americana.

Today in 1971, William Allen White's home in Emporia "Red Rocks" was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Now the Red Rocks State Historic Site, is open to public seasonally (April-October) for guided tours.

It's a home filled with love and loss. Original artifacts include the Whites' dining room table - where several former presidents dined. Another famous guest of the family was Albert Einstein.

Where is a place in Kansas that has surprised you? I have many, but one of the most notable is Historic Lake Scott in western Kansas. Often referred as an oasis, it's a place where history and outdoor recreation collide.
