This is one of several teams of workers I saw in the salt fields along the roads in Southern India. There seemed to be no person in charge or managing the labor, yet how smoothly the group worked in concert, each knowing their role, coordinated with almost musical precision. It is difficult work in intense heat that wears hard on their bodies; they know that. India is the third largest salt producer in the world, and unseasonal heavy rains have already reduced production by 25%, particularly among small farm holders.
