The moment I stepped into Kaitlyn and Tyler's new home, I felt a current of warmth. The walls, still smelling of fresh paint, holding the energy of their brand new chapter. They are expecting their first baby, a little boy. The anticipation was palpable. There was a joy in their movements that inspired me.
I had a vision in mind, an approach that leaned into the unpolished and lived in essence of their experience. I wanted to document not just the glowing beauty of Kaitlyn’s pregnancy, but the deeper emotions swirling around them. The kind of imagery that feels like reminiscent of old disposable camera pictures from moments passed by.
As I set up my camera in their cozy living room, a softly lit space filled with books and treasured objects, I suggested they start with a lighthearted pose, something playful to reflect their dynamic. I loved the idea of spontaneity, so I threw out prompts like “lay in the bathtub fully clothes and rub her feet!” and watched as they laughed and jumped in. This was the honeyed essence I wanted.
Yet, even in the most memorable moments, challenges creeped in like shadows. I found myself battling with the soft morning light that streamed in, creating both beautiful highlights and awkward shadows across their faces. But rather than forcing a flawless setup, I embraced the imperfections. After all, isn’t life itself just a beautiful, chaotic mess? I adjusted my approach, darting between soft close-ups that captured their expressions, to wider frames that told the story of their entirety.
To me, this was more than just a maternity session. It was a snow globe of emotions, a carefully curated collection of grainy yet vibrant with potential memories yet to be made.
Every session adds to a tapestry of inspiration, but this one? It will linger with me. I walked away grateful, carrying with me not just images, but a memory captured. The unfiltered realism of life shone through my lens that day, reminding me of the power of emotion over perfection.
