Toledo Fire and Rescue Department responded to a residential structure fire in the 2600 block of Franklin Avenue on Thursday, October 22, 2026.

Engine 7 and Rescue 7 arrived to find smoke coming from the roof and blackened windows, reporting a working fire. Crews initially believed the fire was upstairs and began an interior attack. After discovering flames in the basement, firefighters withdrew and redirected their attack, locating and extinguishing the fire.

At the same time, multiple crews searched the home following reports of up to three people trapped inside. Search teams encountered an approximately 8-by-8-foot hole in the first floor, preventing them from searching that area. A deceased individual was later located, but access was complicated by the damaged floor and concerns about structural stability. Primary and secondary searches of the entire structure found no additional victims. The technical rescue team was requested, although further evaluation determined the structure was stable enough to proceed with the recovery and investigation.

Initial reports suggest the fire may have been burning for an extended period before 911 was called. Heavy heat damage was found in the room where the body was located. The cause and origin remains under investigation by the Toledo Fire Investigation Unit and Toledo Police Department.

Springfield Township Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire in the 12000 block of Airport Highway on Wednesday, October 21, 2026.

Springfield Engine 56 and U.S. Air Force Engine 81 were initially dispatched for a natural gas leak. The incident was upgraded to a residential structure fire after the caller reported that the gas leak was inside the home and the rear of the house was on fire.

Crews secured the gas supply to the home and extinguished the fire. No injuries were reported.

As we continue to monitor the chemical leak incident in the north Toledo area, you may have questions about the potential health effects of chemical fume exposure. To help answer those questions, we are sharing the following guidance from ProMedica pulmonologist Ashley Black, DO.

🟢 Most Symptoms Are Mild.
-Many people exposed to irritating fumes may experience mild symptoms that improve after moving indoors to fresh air and away from the affected area. However, some symptoms may indicate a more serious reaction. The best guidance we have right now for those near the incident is to shelter in place and stay indoors to prevent inhalation exposure.

🟢 Seek Immediate Medical Attention If You Experience:
-Severe shortness of breath or noisy, high-pitched breathing coming from the upper throat
-Difficulty breathing or chest pain
-Chest tightness, persistent wheezing or severe coughing
-Confusion and excessive fatigue
-Blue, gray or pale lips, skin or fingernails
-Dizziness, fainting or a severe headache
-Difficulty swallowing, sudden hoarseness or worsening throat irritation

🟢 If You Have Asthma or COPD
-People with asthma, COPD or other chronic lung conditions should monitor symptoms closely. If your rescue inhaler is not providing its usual relief or your symptoms are worsening, seek medical evaluation promptly.

🟢 If You Believe You Were Exposed
-Move indoors and decontaminate by rinsing your mouth and eyes thoroughly with water, and take a shower with soap and warm water.
-Follow guidance from local emergency officials, not from unverified information shared on social media.
-Consider reaching out to poison control at 800-222-1222 with questions about potential exposure.
-Monitor your symptoms closely.
-Seek medical care immediately if symptoms are severe, worsening or not improving.

We continue to coordinate with local emergency responders and public health officials while monitoring the situation closely.

HAZMAT SITUATION: North Toledo has a 1 MILE EVACUATION Zone near Progress Ave and Enterprise Blvd due to an unknown chemical leak. The east wind is directing the chemical plume to the WEST.

Our crews have now confirmed very thick chemical plume as far west as Laskey and Douglas! Lots of information is unknown, but treat this as a very serious situation!

Toledo Fire & Rescue responded to a structure fire at the Beacon Point Apartments on Cheyenne Boulevard near Heatherdowns Boulevard shortly after 3 a.m. Tuesday, October 20, 2026.

Battalion 2 arrived first and reported fire coming from the third floor. Engine 21 used its deck gun to knock down the fire while additional crews began an interior attack. The incident was upgraded to a second alarm shortly afterward.

Initial reports indicated that there may still be occupants inside. Firefighters searched the building and found no occupants, but multiple pets were rescued from the building. Firefighters conducted extensive overhaul to ensure the fire was fully extinguished. No injuries to residents or firefighters were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Monclova Township, Springfield Township, and Waterville fire departments responded to a residential structure fire on Green Ivy Lane in Monclova Township on Monday, October 19, 2026.

Crews arrived to find fire on the exterior of the home. Firefighters quickly brought the fire under control, preventing further damage to the residence. No injuries were reported.
