The Toledo Fire & Rescue Department responded to a potential hazardous materials incident at The Toledo Clinic on Wednesday, June 17, 2026.

The incident initially began as a medical call after multiple people reported difficulty breathing. The call was later upgraded to a hazardous materials response, bringing TFRD’s Hazardous Materials Team to the scene.

The building was evacuated, and approximately two dozen patients and staff members were evaluated after reporting similar symptoms. None of the patients required hospitalization, and there were no firefighter injuries.

Hazmat technicians entered the building and conducted air monitoring throughout multiple areas of the facility. Elevated readings were detected in several locations; however, the exact substance involved had not been identified by the time I left. Readings eventually decreased to levels below those considered hazardous.

Crews remained on scene for approximately 7½ hours. Due to approaching storms, a TARTA bus was requested to provide shelter for firefighters and displaced occupants. The Toledo-Lucas County Health Department and the City of Toledo Division of Environmental Services also assisted with the incident. Firefighters were able to enter and retrieve belongings for staff.

Once operations were completed, the building was turned over to Toledo Clinic administration.
