Werner-Boyce State Park had a lot of fun fowl to check out (besides the kingfishers who tormented me all day)! Here is a selection of some that Winter River Photography and I had the opportunity to capture the other day.

Had the opportunity to visit this neat state park with my kayak for the first time the other day along with Winter River Photography. Beautiful morning sunlight but the kingfishers were just mocking me! They are so fast, and catching them in flight while in a drifting kayak was an exercise in... something. Someday I will catch one in flight with the right shutter speed and settings at the right time. In the meantime, here are a few of my "almost!" shots, just to prove I was there. LOL

One of the very first astrophotography targets I attempted to photograph a few years ago was M42 - The Orion Nebula. It is a beautiful portion of the night sky and it relatively easy to see, even with a basic camera and small star rotator. That first attempt was so very basic, but I was soooo proud of it. (If I can find it I will put it in the comments for fun.) A couple of years later I have decided to try again. This time it is taken with a "real" telescope and equatorial mount, but still with just a regular Canon camera. This one starts to show you why it is a favorite target of photographers.

The Orion Nebula is a diffuse nebula in the Milky Way situated south of Orion's Belt in the constellation of Orion, and is known as the middle "star" in the "sword" of Orion. It is one of the brightest nebulae and is visible to the naked eye in the night sky It is roughly1,344 light-years away and is the closest region of massive star formation to Earth. M42 is estimated to be 25 light-years across (so its apparent size from Earth is approximately 1 degree). It has a mass of about 2,000 times that of the Sun.

First time visiting the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge yesterday (1-3-26) and it definitely did not disappoint! My wildlife bingo card was pretty full, although I need to head back to find the bobcats out and about and walk more of the trails. I am told there will be many more types of birds including a lot of migratory birds to see.

I took loads and loads of pictures and still going through them, but here are a few fun ones to give you a flavor for what a neat place the Refuge is. It is an easy place to visit for folks of all ages and abilities, as you can largely drive through and stop for pictures. I definitely recommend it to everyone!

Four nights of imaging with lots of wasted images due to fog coming in overnight, but here is my first image of the Fish Head Nebula.

The Fish Head Nebula is an emission nebula located approximately 6,000 light-years away in the northern constellation Cassiopeia. It is catalogued as IC 1795 in the Index Catalogue.

IC 1795 has been nicknamed the Fish Head Nebula because its shape resembles that of the head of a fish. It is sometimes also known as the Northern Bear Nebula. The nebula is part of a huge star forming region excited by the light of newly formed stars. The large stellar nursery includes the neighboring Heart and Soul Nebulae. The three nebulae appear at the edge of a vast molecular cloud.

Now we're cooking with gas! Imaging the Fish Head Nebula with the FLT 132 on the big mount and Andromeda with the FLT 91 on the new harmonic drive mount. Once I get all of the bugs worked out of that set up I can put the big SCT 9" on the new mount and image some far away galaxies and hopefully figure out planetary imaging!

For those of you who noticed my recent posts regarding data collection with the telescope on M33 - the Triangulum Galaxy - this is what 117 5 minute subs turns out to be once they are stacked together and processed. There were 3 more subs but since they turned out to be pics of the roof of my house in at about 2 AM when the galaxy moved behind it, they were completely deleted. Most of the subs with planes and maybe a few meteors passing through ended up usable.

This photo was taken using what is called a One Shot Color (as opposed to monochrome) camera. Not bad, just a little flat without the narrowband gases typically captured in monochrome. I will need to get some filters for the OSC camera.

FYI - the Triangulum Galaxy is a beautiful, face-on spiral galaxy, the third-largest in our Local Group, located about 3 million light-years away in the constellation Triangulum, visible as a faint smudge with the naked eye but stunning in telescopes. It is known for its active star formation, rich gas, and large nebulae like NGC 604.

Well the first 5 minute sub of the evening is a throw away thanks to a high flying plane. Sometimes getting an early start is counter productive with more air traffic. But it's another beautiful clear night so should capture several hours of data for the Triangulum Galaxy.

Pretty excited to have some clear skies and one telescope up and running. Was intending to just do set up tonight but it went so well, now capturing images of the Triangulum Galaxy. 4 (5 minute long) subs in and all is well. There is a LOT of condensation tonight though so hoping the dew heaters can keep up! 36 more to go!!
