A little update on the SS United States. She is waiting for the final approval from the EPA and The Army Corps of Engineers to become the largest artificial reef in the Gulf of America southwest of Destin-Fort Walton Beach.

A few images from yesterday afternoon on the Dauphin Island Causeway with the Roseate Spoonbills. There were ten that I could count. Black Skimmers and a Reddish Egret were also on hand for a show.

Spent a little time downtown to capture of drone and other photos. I did capture some of the SS United States, just waiting for it to leave and the Navy's Enterprise to come to be scrapped.

I had a surprise this morning, as I was sitting at my desk, I heard the Red-shouldered hawk calling it's mate. I picked up my camera and got to the front door fast. I was able to capture a few photos of one of them across the street from our home. I did not see them that often last season, but they are back.

Out early this morning birdwatching and photographing the action. I sure enjoy being able to capture the Osprey taking flight at eye level. This morning was a wonderful opportunity to do just that, capture the Osprey at eye level, not looking up, not shooting down, but eye level. Thanks for another great trip Mark, even if it was hot.

After the Bald Eagles & Reddish Egrets, the Brown Pelican is my third favorite bird to photograph. Growing up in Louisiana as a kid, DDT had caused problems for the nesting pelicans and affecting the numbers to also extinction in Louisiana. The Brown Pelican is the state bird and that was difinitely bad. The state wildlife & fisheries brought in some birds and the population made a very strong come back.

I said all this to come to this point, while out in the Biloxi Marsh
south of Pass Christian MS., Capt Sonny came up on the single very striking Brown Pelican with a VERY RED neck. It stood out from all the other Brown Pelican and looked like the other didn't want anything to do with it. I came to find out that it was a California Brown Pelican. And to verify that it was, the Merlin App said the came thing. Now you have to slide over in the app for the Brown Pelican to find it as the Breeding California Brown Pelican. I the time, I came up with the idea that even the pelicans are leaving California.

I the first photo, you can see the difference between the Louisiana pelicans and the one from CA. I did not get to go out this year, so I can not confirm if it is still in the area, but I hope so.

Still reviewing some past photos from the Louisiana Marsh with Shore Thing Charters Birding/Photography taken in March 2025. I could have filled up a 512 GB card with images of the reddish egret and the things they were doing. I was breeding time and the males were showing their colors. The two that I'm posting today just strutted their stuff at each other showing who was better.
