Something I think I didn’t realize when I first really dove into focusing on Orthodox Photography is how much of my work would be in low light. While there are certainly many Orthodox churches that have large windows letting in boatloads of natural light, that hasn’t been the norm. A lot of my experience has been shaped by churches not designed with natural light in mind- and often, the artificial lights are worse. They cast harsh shadows and have color casts that don’t flatter anyone.
But my super creative mom always reminded me that creativity is borne out of limitations. She always prefers to make a quilt out of fabric she already has, so she’s challenged to make use of unconventional prints, colors and textures.
So I’ve learned to lean into that darkness. And sometimes that helps me find the light!
