We've been pretty quiet lately so I thought I'd share with you some images of the total eclipse that I was lucky enough to see in August when in the States. The first was taken using a solar filter just as the eclipse started - you can quite clearly see some sun spots on the surface. The second was during totality and shows the upper and outer atmosphere of the sun (the corona) and finally, what I had always wanted to create - a composite time-lapse of the eclipse from start to finish. Hope you like them...

Here is a few shots from our recents trips down to Sycamore Gap at Hadrians Wall. We captured the daylight version back in March and the night shot last week. Cheeky wee star trail too. Recommend the walk from the road following the wall to the gap.. as you will keep asking yourself "Definitely the next valley!!"

Not the first thing that springs to mind when thinking about camouflage...
The "Dazzle Ship" installation at Leith Docks in Edinburgh by artist Ciara Phillips commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Jutland.
Over 2000 ships were covered in disorienting shapes and colours designed to make it almost impossible for U-boats to track their range, speed and direction accurately.
Although the technique was developed by artist Norman Wilkinson, this installation also celebrates the mostly female students who created all the different designs - the motto "Every Woman A Signal Tower" is painted across the ship in Morse code.

We haven't done much photography lately for one reason or another but here's one when the new Forth Crossing was just started. Considering it's just about (structurally) complete we really ought to get an update of this shot soon...

The Weeping Window sculpture at The Black Watch Castle and Museum in Stirling.
Thousands of handmade ceramic poppies falling from the tower window, originally part of the huge Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red at the Tower of London to commemorate all those who fell in the First World War.
This sculpture is on display at the Black Watch Castle until 25th September and is well worth visiting if you can.

The Flying Unit has been in the skies over the Firth of Forth recently. In between surveying targets the team snapped the Forth Bridges on a beautiful day. The Queensferry Crossing is still under construction and due to open next year, joining the Forth Bridge and Forth Road Bridge in spanning the waterway. Did you know the fantastic Forth Bridge is a World Heritage Site?

The Flying Scotsman, after a 10 year restoration, and 16 years since she was last in Scotland, crosses our favourite bridge.
Built in 1923, she was the first locomotive to pull the London Kings Cross to Edinburgh Waverley express without stopping, and the first steam train in the UK to officially break 100mph.

Just added to our Edinburgh collection - Edinburgh Castle from The Vennel, off The Grassmarket. The Vennel is a wide, stepped alley way which connects The Grassmarket to Heriot Place. Along the eastern side of the Vennel (behind and to the right of where this was taken) still stands a part of one of the original city walls of Edinburgh - The Telfer Wall.

Plodda Falls is a waterfall, situated 5 km south-west of the village of Tomich, near Glen Affric, in the Highlands of Scotland. The falls are 46 m high, and are on the Allt na Bodachan, near where it flows into the Abhainn Deabhag, which in turn joins with the River Affric to form the River Glass.

In 1880, a footbridge was built across the top of the falls, by Lord Tweedmouth, who owned the Guisachan estate. In 2005, the Forestry Commission found this bridge to be dangerous, and it was closed. It was replaced by a new viewing platform in 2009
