Lake Mary - 5/10/24
Aurora Borealis and the Milky Way
Matthew Hartshorn
:
One Friday evening Matt had a wonderful idea to go take photos of the Northern Lights. Minnie was bored and wanted to do something different so it didn’t take much to convince her. After only seconds of deliberation, they had made their decision. “Let’s go!” they both agreed.
They packed their things quickly with little effort but much focus. Remembering all of the small, yet important details. Leaving just one thing behind could mean disaster for the whole trip.
Matt was very helpful in that he was good at getting everything in the car. He even reminded Minnie to bring pillows and a blanket. But she chose not to take them as she was thinking “screw it we’ll just stay in a motel.” totally spacing that it would be graduation weekend prices. Whoops!
Eager to experience this once in a lifetime sight, they both jumped in the car packed with everything they needed for this spontaneous road trip. They had both agreed that even though it was last minute, this was definitely not a mistake. They had been on several road trips together by now. Some of them well over three hours long.
Now they were off! They couldn’t wait to capture the northern lights as well as anything else unexpected, and Minnie was hoping there would be lots of great surprises.
What would this night bring?
Who knows. 🤷🏻♀️
That was all part of the adventure and the unknown. Because in its essence that is where the true excitement lyes.
This three hour road trip had Matt and Minnie driving down the worst construction corridor in Arizona. It was also already after 8 pm.
Good music, short bursts of conversation followed by spaces of silence filled the gaps of time travel. As they rolled through the once deserted Sonoran desert, they toiled with an overpopulated highway full of impatient drivers insisting on riding their asses.
After two stops for gas, caffeine and snacks they were now just minutes away from the final destination. While driving on Lake Mary road, they passed through a controlled burn area filled with so much smoke they could barely see. The smoke was so thick they almost didn’t see the deer standing right next to the road. Staring at both of them. Deer in headlights!
After a few minutes of crawling through thick white smoke, it began to clear. The skies opened up and were filled with specs of light. Almost tangible, cosmic infinite space was now within reach.
As they both looked up they could see the distant constellations and some soft pink hues to the west.
“This is it!” Matt exclaimed. “Now we head to Lake Mary to find the perfect spot to pull over.”
So much more happened after this that I can’t include in this story, but let’s be real👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼 THIS IS WHAT LIFE IS ALL ABOUT.
