You know what is beautiful? A wedding dress with a train...
You know what is less beautiful? Struggling to bustle the damn thing for an hour...

Want a hack for managing the bustle? Delegate. Have a bridesmaid or your Maid of Honor be the Bustling Master and their job before shotgunning beers with the cute single groomsman is to bustle you. One person and she learns from the dress shop or seamstress and she practices with them until she has it down.

Struggling with a bustle is not what you want to be doing when you should be dancing, eating, and running off with your new hubby. Trust me!

One of my favorite things that INSTANTLY elevates a wedding is Vow books. I love these neat little books that keep your vows private, and together throughout your day, plus you can put them in a shadowbox with more of your wedding day items to memorialize it.

When you shoot a really fun wedding in and are told that one of the people in this photo is the drummer for a heavy metal band... and a couple days after the wedding you go to listen to that band to find out that they 493,000+ monthly listeners on Spotify, inspired and a fanbase that spans decades...

A couple years after this wedding I got a message from a bride. Usually this means they need access to their photos, or they are pregnant and want a maternity shoot.

Not this time.

This time it was a heavy message.

The best man had unexpectedly and suddenly passed away. He was an uncle to the couple's children, a safe space, and the groom's closest friend.

She was asking if I still had their RAWs and if there were any more of him.. candid, blurry, anything... I did still have some of their Raw images and I was able to provide them with a mini gallery (for free of course).

This just shed some light on why this work is important. Why photographers exist. Why its important that you capture these moments.

The best man was a man on the move and there weren't many photos of him. Some of my images were likely used for the funeral, obituary, in memoriam and to help soothe the cruel touch of death that preys on the living.

When the people we love are gone - what do we have left? Memories... sure... but we all know that the vibrancy of a memory fades with time... We have photos.

Just something to think about.

Y'all ever have to go to work when your personal life is like too much.

Same.

I had this incredible engagement shoot - at one of my favorite spots - the sky was giving overcast and light rain, and the trees were turning that storm into this beautiful green oasis.

The couple was fun and in love.

Me? I cried the whole way there and the whole way home.

I was going through relationship turmoil and purgatory (2nd marriages... am I right?) - it was a terrible time. But I showed up, celebrated my couple, played in the rain and the green grass and stared at a mountain wondering why...

I cried the whole way home because I learn peoples stories a lot of the time when I am shooting. Whether they have been through divorce, life turned upside down, or sometimes completely derailed. (How's that for metaphors?)

But somehow - someway - everybody finds who they are supposed to be and who they are supposed to be with in the end.

There is peace in knowing that the journey is still ongoing... there's still time and where there is a will there is a way. Add every cliche to this post because I have found most of them to be true.

Anyway - if you have powered through something for work & want to share below - do!

This all happened years ago, but I just thought it would be nice to share the story.
