Southern California gives us something really special this time of year.

While so much of the country is packing away summer, we’re stepping into some of the most beautiful light of the entire year. The beaches become quieter, the evenings feel softer, and it’s one of my favorite seasons to photograph families.

Last week I hosted my first shootout, and I’ve been struggling to find words that feel big enough for what it meant to me.

I keep coming back to one thought:

What an incredible privilege it was to invite people into something so vulnerable and sacred.

My heart.

The older I get, the less interested I am in trying to create work that everyone likes.

I think there is something really important about finding a photographer whose way of seeing feels honest to you. Not because one style is better than another, but because photographs become part of your family’s history. The person documenting them matters.

Some people want perfectly directed portraits, and there are photographers who do that beautifully. What I hope to create is something that feels observed instead of orchestrated.

My work isn’t for everybody, and I’ve realized that’s exactly how it should be. The families who value this way of remembering their lives will always be the right fit for it.

I’ve been thinking a lot about why this place has stayed with me.

Maybe it’s because an elopement strips everything away until all that’s left is what matters.

Two people.
A promise.
A willingness to step into the unknown together.

Watching them stand at the edge of something so vast, I couldn’t stop thinking that marriage asks this of us over and over again.

To trust.
To choose each other.
To keep walking forward without knowing exactly what the landscape ahead will look like.

Maybe that’s why wild places feel like they were made for love stories.

They remind us that love has never been about certainty.

It’s always been about choosing to take the next step together.

In a world where there are thousands of photographers to choose from, somehow our paths still cross. A name shared by a friend. A photo that stops your scroll. A feeling you can’t quite explain.

Watching all of my boys’ back-to-school clothes and supplies laid out today hit me in a way I wasn’t expecting.

It reminded me why I built a photography business around mothers.

Because behind every first day of school is someone who quietly made it happen. Someone who sacrificed, planned ahead, picked up the extra shift, skipped something for themselves, or simply showed up again and again without expecting recognition.

Every year, my mom helps in such a significant way with getting the boys ready for school. Seeing everything together makes me realize just how much love can look like practical, everyday generosity.

So this is just a little thank you to my mom, and to every mother, grandmother, and woman who carries so much behind the scenes. The work you do may not always be seen, but it shapes their childhood in the most beautiful ways.

The ocean never asks permission to be vast, wild, or soft. Motherhood doesn’t either. Pregnancy is its own tide; pulling you into someone new while growing someone entirely their own. There is beauty in learning to trust the waves.
