There is a reason why nihimásaní dóó nihinálí asdzáá, cheii dóó nálí hasteen told us the things they did. Be up before the sun, run, pray, give offerings, be thankful, respect all ways of life equally, etc.
These, among others, are the tools they handed us to fight the monsters that could possibly pay a visit. Monsters such as poverty, hunger, depression or other mental health issues, laziness, sickness, etc. The tools our ancestors gave us are here to keep us strong and healthy.
Remember who you are and where you come from, by using the tools, and you will remain blessed ❤️

MoM - Month of May: GORMAN Mothers

May 10th - "Leila With Child" a 1978 Original Lithograph by R.C. Gorman

"I remember one time I was posing with one of my babies, and she was nursing. The whole time we were sitting, I was looking at those adorable little feet and thinking how beautiful Gorman would draw them. But he covered them up with a blanket! He did capture, though, in his own way, the motherly feeling I had." - Laila Bynoe

Laila Bynoe was one of R.C.'s regular models. She would have been 36 when this lithograph was made and it falls within the time period when she was modeling for him. I can't help but wonder if Leila and Laila aren't one-and-the-same...

MoM - Month of May: GORMAN Mothers day 8

May 8th - "Homage To Spiderwoman And Navajo Weavers" by Michael Gorman

As a matrilineal society, the Navajo Mother, Aunt (Ama Yazhi/Little-Mother), and Grandmother (Ama Sani/Old-Mother) play a central role in the family and are the keepers of weaving. Weaving has long sustained the Navajo - providing an essential utilitarian item for the family, these items have also provided a source of economic stability for the Navajo.

As you look from outside the sculpture, a motherly figure welcomes you into the folds of the blanket. While based in Navajo tradition, this work transcends across cultures to everyone who can remember or longs for a mother’s embrace.

MoM - Month of May: GORMAN Mothers day 7

May 7th - 'Navajos always had respect for strong, powerful women who would go out and chop wood, herd sheep, have babies in the field. My Indian woman isn't glamorous but she is beautiful. She is earthly, nurturing, and it is a constant challenge to capture her infinite variety.' - R.C. Gorman on drawing women

Mother And Child is an original, small edition, lithograph by R.C. Gorman created with Windmill Press in 1975. This is one of Gorman's first projects after leaving the Tamarind Institute to begin work with fellow printmakers. These include: Windmill Press, Hand Graphics, Editions Press, Western Graphics Workshop, Origins Press, and Houston Fine Arts Press.

Only 53 lithographs were produced of Mother And Child (50 Artist's Edition, 2 Printer's Proofs, and 1 Bon a Tirer - plus a cancelation proof), making this an exceptionally rare Gorman Lithograph.

"Earth Child", 1979

MoM - Month of May: GORMAN Mothers day 6

May 6th - 'Born of the Earth, we return to the Earth. Your umbilical cord was cut, severing you from the source, mother and Mother Earth. It is buried, keeping you tied to the land, until you one day return and are whole again.'

Earth Child is an three-state original lithograph by R.C. Gorman created at Western Graphics Workshop in 1979.

Good Evening !! 🌙 ❤️
MoM - Month of May: GORMAN Mothers day 5

May 5th - "Waiting Women" a 1976 original lithograph by R.C. Gorman.

I meant to schedule this one for yesterday. Waiting Women embodies the emotion and circumstance of the women - the mothers, wives, sisters, grandmothers and aunts - who wait with quiet anticipation of their men - their sons, husbands, brothers - to return from war.

I cannot say more about this emotion than that. I feel this work speaks volumes more than I could.

Gorman later did a special edition poster of a painting, "The Women Who Waited" coinciding with the unveiling of his monument "Code Talker" at the NAU campus in Flagstaff, AZ.
