A lot of the “film look” is decided before you take the photo.

You could shoot the same scene on two different stocks, and the mood could change completely.

One might keep the colors clean and polished. Another might make the same place feel warm, gritty, nostalgic, or slightly strange.

That’s why ISO shouldn’t be the only thing you consider.

Start with the photo you want to make.

A bright summer afternoon? A flash-lit party? Neon lights at midnight? Soft portraits? Something that feels like it belongs to another decade?

Choose a film stock that suits the mood.

Share with us in the comments your favorite film photos and save this for the next time you’re standing in front of the film fridge, trying to decide what to grab. 🎞️

Film photography comes with its own language.

Push one stop. Box speed. Halation. Pull process. C-41.

You hear these terms enough that eventually you kind of know what they mean, until someone at the lab asks you a question and suddenly you’re second guessing yourself.

So we’re breaking down the film terms that tend to confuse people and explaining them in plain English.

The goal is simple: next time you drop off a roll, you know exactly what you’re asking for and why.

Save this one for your next lab visit, and follow Coastal for more film education that actually helps you shoot with confidence. 🎞️

Alex Webb taught me that a lot of street photography is just being willing to hang around longer than everyone else.

You find a scene that feels close.

The light is good. The background is good. A couple people line up.

But it’s not quite there yet.

So you wait.

Then someone moves. Someone else walks in. It almost works, then it falls apart again.

Looking at Alex’s photos, it’s easy to think he just happens to catch these perfect little moments.

But after spending time with him, you realize he works a scene way longer than most people would.

He keeps watching, keeps shooting, and waits for all the pieces to finally come together.

That really stuck with me.

A lot of the photos that look “lucky” probably aren’t luck at all.

Someone just stayed long enough to get them.

We stopped by Lance’s Lance Rothstein expecting to see a few cool Polaroids. Instead, we found one of the biggest collections we’ve ever seen.

So we gave him a challenge: show us the 5 weirdest cameras you got.

One is still factory sealed. One is a piece of Polaroid history. And the last one… is basically a wooden box. 👀

Have you ever seen or owned any of these?

That film look you love might not be coming entirely from the film. 👀

For decades, two scanners have helped shape how film photography looks on our screens: the Fuji Frontier and the Noritsu.

And they see the same negative very differently.

The Frontier tends to produce more contrast, saturation, and punch right away.

The Noritsu gives you more dynamic range and flexibility, especially with underexposed film, expired rolls, or tricky lighting.

Same film. Same photo. Different scanner. Different starting point.

That’s why we use both at Coastal. Choosing the right scanner is part of getting the most out of every roll.

Now look through your favorite film photos and ask yourself:

Frontier or Noritsu? 🎞️
