Throughout my life, my biggest challenge has always been starting. It’s crazy what can come from simply deciding to do it. It just might be LEGENDARY 🤫

I was wrong in thinking I’d be able to “just do it.” Pre-mom Shaniya? She did everything she said she would do. And have I racked up a ton of skills throughout the course of life because of her. Today? I am continually looking for the balance of giving myself grace and not coddling my commitments as an excuse to sit around and scroll.

Getting out of the house with a plan to shoot something I’d never done before was bold. Insane even. But for those few hours I became her again. The Shaniya that acted once an idea came to mind. I know I’ve still got a long way to go. But I’m done letting her disappear the second I stop filming.

And in keeping with that, I need your help. This was fun, but it’s just a small step in my UNblocked journey. If I want to get to the other side, I’ve gotta keep hitting record on the camera—hot Tampa weather and all 🥵

So I’m turning it over to you. What type of project should I attempt next? The crazier it sounds, the better.

And as usual, the things I simply can’t say here—I share in my newsletter. The 🔗 is in my bio to get the hot take next week 👀

Over the years, I’ve pacified myself because I thought I was always doing the right thing. Spending most of my adult life as a single mom, I took the work that sucked the creative life out of me if it meant putting food in my kids’ mouth and keeping a roof over their heads.

I was sincere in my effort to take care of my kids by accepting any project that came my way. I was also sincerely wrong.

Because those decisions, while anchored in the right place, cost me. I put my dreams in the back of a drawer and always had what felt like a valid reason to keep it glued shut. I always told myself I’d open it when I had more time, more money, and more resources....

Turns out “when” is the enemy of a dream. Meant to keep you in a holding pattern until everything feels just right. I’ve gotten so sick of my own echo chamber that I’ve decided to finally start.

And I’m inviting you to join me. Because I’m not the only creative who’s stuck right now. But I know that we can hold each other accountable, share what’s working to keep the rut at bay and pull each other from the back of our dream drawers when the feeling of being stuck hits its peak.

(Now I can’t put ALL my bizness on Instagram, I’m saving the most personal bits for my newsletter. Click the link in my bio to get those out-takes this Friday!)

i’ve spent a good part of the last 3 years ashamed to look too long in the mirror.

the people who know me most intimately — they know me as the confident go-getter who figures it out regardless of all she has going on. i couldn’t have felt further from her.

i associated burnout with not feeling good enough. that was evident in how little i wanted to pick up a camera. what i didn’t want to admit was that i’d spent years in the wrong rooms, with the wrong people—and quietly paying for it.

a fault i’ve owned fully. and now, finally, doing something about it.

somewhere between the bts and the final shot, i found her again. full of life. certain. in her element.

i’m falling in love with the process again. but if i’m being honest, i’m really romanticizing her this go around.

to the one buried beneath all her mess—it’s time.
