July of 2023 took me to Minnesota. While my friends and I were there mostly to shoot trains in Duluth, I asked for a little detour up to the ore mines to see what we could find…alas, the few P&H 2800XPB’s, a few large haul trucks, some massive drills and a CAT 6040.

A few years ago with on I-476 in NEPA. Two LR-11000’s were assigned to lift and place steel as part of the Hawk Falls Bridge reconstruction project. The figures are incredible; 217ft of main boom, 295ft of luffing jib, 231 tons of superstructure counterweight, 55 tons of central ballast and 496 tons of counterweight on the tray. I wish they would have kept the cranes there, they really added to the landscape.

A little throwback to the I-95 CAP demolition two years ago. A lot of work was done over the two weekends and presented some incredible photo opportunities. I don’t think there will be another opportunity like this in the next few years!

A little throwback to one of the first images I ever shot in a coal mine. In December of 2018 I threw up a Hail Mary and reached out to Lehigh Anthracite about doing a tour and shooting the operations. After a brief phone call, a day and time were scheduled! At this point the largest machine I had photographed was a CAT 990K…and boy I had no idea what I was about to see! The first stop was “Job 88” where the CAT 6030FS was working with a Terex RH120-E and a bunch of mismatched haul trucks. Needless to say my jaw dropped after we crested the hill down into one of the cuts. Ever since then I have completely fallen in love with mining operations and mining equipment. I’ve been very lucky to visit other coal mines over the years but Lehigh will always be special to me.

Couple of things for size comparison in this photo! A Ford F350, which could easily fit in the bucket of the Marion 7800 dragline, gives you a scale of just how big the bucket actually is. In the foreground is a Komatsu WA800 series loader, which is dwarfed by the dragline. These two machines are part of the fleet that operate at ’s Wadesville mining sit just outside the City of Pottsville, Pennsylvania.
