As a photographer and a mom, I completely understand wanting to protect our children online, but I also think it’s important to remember that not posting their photos on social media doesn’t eliminate the risk. Children’s images exist in yearbooks, school and sports photos, team websites, other parents’ phones, security camera are steady recording your child any time you go anywhere, cloud storage, and even devices/accounts that could potentially be compromised.
There is unfortunately no way to guarantee that an image will never fall into the wrong hands once it exists digitally. I think the best thing we can do is stay educated, take reasonable precautions, respect each parent’s comfort level, and be mindful about what we share—without creating the idea that parents who choose to share photos of their children are automatically putting them in danger. So for now, here is my stance:
