Aurora Dora Northern Lights & Night Sky Photography Gallery in Downtown Talkeetna, Alaska, and at www.AuroraDora.com. WHEN IT'S DARK. I SEE THE LIGHTS! That was it!

Night skies photography mostly from Alaska but also from Arizona. "Aurora" Dora Redman relocated from São Paulo, Brazil, to Alaska in 2001 and has been chasing and photographing Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) ever since. "I have never heard about the Northern Lights before I moved to Alaska. The first time I saw them it was love at first sight. From there on I knew what I wanted to do, share the Auroras with the world and show them to everyone who doesn't have the opportunity to see the Northern Lights. That's what I have been doing since." Her Aurora images have been published by NASA, Alaska Magazine, Last Frontier Magazine, Nature Photographer Magazine, Northwest Travel & Life Magazine and many other publications. Her unique work has been used by the Geophysical Institute, the University of Alaska and the Society of Nature Photographers. Her creations can be seen here on her website www.AuroraDora.com, in many Lodges in Alaska and at her gallery, Aurora Dora, in downtown Talkeetna, Alaska (Main Street & Talkeetna Spur Road)

Aurora season is here, and that means cameras and equipment will be spending plenty of time outside in Alaska's cold and unpredictable weather.

One of the biggest concerns when bringing your equipment back inside is condensation. Moving a camera directly from subzero temperatures into a warm house can cause moisture to form inside the equipment.

I use a couple of methods to help prevent this. When I'm finished shooting, I put my camera into a large ziplock bag while I'm still outside, seal it, and then put it into my camera case before coming inside. I let it warm up gradually and wait several hours before opening the case.

An insulated camera case is another good option. The important thing is to avoid a sudden temperature change and give your equipment time to adjust.

One last tip: if you're eager to check the photos you just captured, remember to remove your memory card before putting the camera away!

If you didn't have a chance to visit my shop this summer, you can buy this print (and a lot of my other aurora photography) directly from your home! ➡️ https://prints.auroradora.com/Aurora-Borealis/Horizontal-images/i-wvQLBqD/A

"When it's dark, I see the lights!"

If you found me for the first time this aurora season, hello! I've been chasing and photographing the northern lights since 2001 when I moved to Alaska. I'd never heard about the northern lights prior to moving to Alaska, and the first time I was able to witness their beauty, I knew that sharing the magic of the aurora with others was my passion.

The nickname “Aurora Dora” came about when a fellow photographer said, “You can’t just be ‘Dora’. Look at your work, you need to be Aurora Dora!” He spread the name throughout her small community, and it stuck. Now, people around the world stop by the Aurora Dora gallery in Talkeetna, located at 22229 S Talkeetna Spur Rd; and also you can join me in my aurora photography workshops!

A sturdy tripod is one of the most important tools for night photography. When photographing the northern lights, we're often using longer exposures because of the low light. Any movement during that exposure can create a blurry or shaky image. A good tripod keeps your camera still, helping you capture sharp, clear photographs of the aurora. My advice? Don't underestimate the tripod! A flimsy one can make night photography much more difficult.

It's never too early to shop for the holidays! 🎁 The most popular gift in my shop is... the Aurora Calendar! Discover the beauty of Alaskan Nights with the 2027 Aurora Borealis Calendar featuring 14 stunning images captured by Aurora Dora in Southcentral Alaska, between Palmer and Denali State Park, particularly in the Talkeetna region. For the 2027 Calendar cover, I selected "Unique Aurora Night", photographed on November 11, 2025. A massive geomagnetic storm created a stunning aurora borealis that lit up North America.

When do you think aurora season begins?

Most people think of the dead of winter when they picture the northern lights, but we don't actually need months of complete darkness to see them.

Here in Talkeetna, the first signs of darkness begin returning around mid August. By August 14, we have about two hours of darkness, and we gain roughly six more minutes each day. It's the very early beginning of aurora season.

The same thing happens in reverse in the spring. By mid to late April, many people consider the season finished, but there can still be a small window of darkness and nautical twilight in the middle of the night.

The latest I've photographed the northern lights here was on Mother's Day in 2016, May 8. It was a particularly strong aurora, and we were able to see the display even with daylight beginning to creep into the sky.

It turned out to be a pretty wonderful Mother's Day present!

Aurora season is just around the corner.

For many people, the first glimpse of the northern lights signals the arrival of fall. For me, it marks the start of another season spent beneath Alaska's night sky, watching, waiting, and appreciating every moment the aurora decides to appear.
