Talk about a parting gift! 🦉✨

On my way out of Oak Openings after a Sunday morning walk, I got the surprise of a lifetime. I had absolutely no idea this beautiful Barred Owl was sitting there until I was practically right next to it! Talk about incredible camouflage. It definitely startled me for a second, and it just sat there completely silent, calm, and unbothered, just observing.

I managed to snap a quick photo, made my peace with this gorgeous creature, and kept on moving. Truly a magical nature moment to wrap up a weekend! 🌿💚

The "Hiccup" in the Grass

Managed to cross paths with a Henslow’s Sparrow at Irwin Prairie State Nature Preserve - another lifer!

These little guys are famous for being heard but rarely seen. If you aren't looking for that short, flat-headed profile or listening for their distinct "hiccup" call, you’ll miss them entirely as they scurry through the sedge meadows. My Peterson field guide calls their song, "a poor vocal effort." I think it's perfect lol 🙂

There is nothing quite like the unique habitat at Irwin Prairie, especially when it rewards you with a look at a species that relies so heavily on these specific grasslands.

A sleepy Eastern Whip-poor-will at Magee Marsh on May 7th. It’s always a treat to spot one of these masters of disguise out in the open (well, as open as they get!) during the day.

The intricate patterns in its feathers are just stunning when you get a chance to see them up close like this, a lifer for me!. Definitely a memorable moment from the boardwalk.

The magic of just keeps giving! 🌿✨

Yesterday at Magee Marsh (5/8/2026), the boardwalk was buzzing with excitement, and for good reason: a Golden-winged Warbler was in our midst!
The energy was infectious. Word spread like wildfire along the path, some had already locked eyes on it, while others were picking up its distinct song on the Merlin app. We eventually caught up with a group that had just spotted it and joined the huddle.
This little beauty didn't make it easy! It darted back and forth across the boardwalk before eventually vanishing into the brush. I managed one split-second window with a clear line of sight and grabbed a quick photo before it was gone.
The best part? After the initial rush died down, I overheard a fellow birder say that in 40+ years of visiting Magee, this was their very first time seeing a Golden-winged Warbler. Absolutely incredible.

There is nothing quite like spring migration at Magee Marsh! I spent some time on the boardwalk today and the activity was incredible. It’s always a thrill to see these vibrant travelers passing through, it truly is the "Warbler Capital of the World."

Spent some quiet time at Irwin Prairie yesterday and was rewarded with this beautiful visitor. It’s amazing what you can see when you take a moment to just stop and listen. 🌳 ✨

Tonight's storm front moving through our area with sunshine pushing through behind it. The vivid double rainbow it produced shortly after was, 👌🏼 muy bueno!

Anyone else catch the "Sky Fan" tonight? 😲

These are called Crepuscular Rays. They’re basically sunbeams being filtered through clouds on the horizon. The wispy strands above them are Cirrus clouds—literally ice crystals floating 20,000+ feet up.

Gotta love those Northwest Ohio sunsets. 🌅
