~KISSING THROUGH HISTORY~
Some bridges are built to get us from one place to another, while others give us a reason to stop and make a memory. Located on the grounds of the Vermont Country Store in Rockingham, Vermont, the charming Kissing Bridge has a story of its own.

Originally built in West Townshend in 1872 and once known as the Depot Bridge, it was later relocated and reconstructed at the Vermont Country Store in 1967. Its nickname recalls an old New England tradition, when covered bridges offered sweethearts traveling by horse and carriage a quiet moment to steal a kiss.

With the American flag proudly displayed along its side, this picturesque little bridge stands as a reminder of simpler times, cherished traditions, and the enduring charm of small-town America. A place where history, romance, and a little American nostalgia come together, reminding us that not every bridge is meant to be crossed in a hurry.

Standing along Homestead Avenue in West Swanzey, New Hampshire, the Community Church represents a connection to the generations who helped shape this small New England community.

The history of organized worship in West Swanzey stretches back more than two centuries. In 1792, a Baptist congregation was established in the village, followed by the construction of a church building in 1804. Nearly four decades later, in 1843, a Universalist congregation was organized, adding another chapter to the village's religious history. These early houses of worship became part of a growing community shaped by agriculture, local industries, and the nearby Ashuelot River.

By the late 1800s, West Swanzey had developed into an active village where mills, businesses, homes, and churches reflected the daily lives of its residents. Over the generations, the village witnessed considerable change as transportation improved, industries evolved, and new families became part of the community.

Today, the Community Church remains a familiar landmark in West Swanzey, reflecting the village's longstanding religious traditions and the generations who came before us.

Long before homes and summer camps lined the shores of Swanzey Lake in Swanzey, New Hampshire, this landscape lay beneath massive sheets of glacial ice. As the glaciers retreated near the end of the last Ice Age, roughly 12,000 to 14,000 years ago, they left behind a landscape of carved bedrock, scattered boulders, and natural depressions that gradually filled with water. Swanzey Lake is part of this ancient geological story, its origins rooted in the powerful forces of nature that shaped the New England landscape thousands of years before the first settlers arrived.

Covering approximately 111 acres and reaching depths of more than 50 feet, Swanzey Lake is surrounded by ancient granite and other rock formations that help shape the area's natural drainage and groundwater flow. But the lake's history isn't entirely the work of nature. At its southern outlet stands a dam dating back to approximately 1790, which has helped regulate water levels for more than two centuries. The dam has undergone modifications over the years, including documented work in 1989. Following significant flooding in 2023, renewed attention turned toward the condition of this historic structure. In recent years, the Town of Swanzey has pursued engineering evaluations and plans for future improvements, continuing efforts to maintain a dam that has played an important role in the lake's history for more than two centuries.

Over the generations, Swanzey Lake became a destination for summer camps, seasonal cottages, and families seeking the peaceful beauty of New Hampshire's Monadnock Region.

Today, it remains a beautiful reminder of how nature and history have shaped our corner of New Hampshire, where thousands of years of geological history meet more than two centuries of human influence and generations of memories along the water's edge.

BELLOWS FALLS, VERMONT
Along the Connecticut River, in the town of Rockingham, Vermont, lies the historic village of Bellows Falls. With its beautiful architecture, historic storefronts, and streets that have welcomed generations of residents and travelers, it's one of those New England communities where the past still feels very much alive.

Long before Bellows Falls became a center of commerce and industry, Native Americans gathered along the river, where the powerful falls provided an important fishing location. In 1785, the first bridge across the Connecticut River was built here, helping establish the village as an important transportation crossroads.

In 1802, the completion of the Bellows Falls Canal marked another remarkable chapter in its history. Built with nine locks to allow boats to bypass the falls, it was one of the earliest transportation canals in the United States. With the arrival of the railroad in 1849, the canal gradually shifted toward providing waterpower for the mills and factories that helped Bellows Falls become a thriving industrial community, particularly known for its paper mills.

Much of the beautiful architecture surrounding the Square reflects this prosperous era. Although the mills have largely faded into history, the village has retained its historic charm, with familiar streets, local businesses, and buildings that continue to tell its story.

If you've traveled Route 103 through Rockingham, Vermont, chances are you've noticed this picturesque old grist mill near the Vermont Country Store. With its rustic wooden exterior, large waterwheel, and peaceful millpond, it's one of those familiar New England scenes that seems worthy of a postcard.

Beyond its charm, the mill represents an important chapter of Vermont's rural history. Long before electricity and modern machinery, grist mills were essential to farming communities. Powered by flowing water, they ground harvested grain into flour and meal, providing a service that generations of families depended upon.

The mill is located on the grounds of the Vermont Country Store, which opened its Rockingham location in 1967. Today, the Grist Mill and Water Wheel offers visitors a glimpse into the traditional milling practices that once played such an important role in New England.
