“Tired Momma”
This Whitetail doe is almost ready to have her baby/babies. She was well hidden in the trees and for a while I thought she might be in labor. When she did finally stand up I could see her very large belly and full udder. I’m sure she will deliver any day now.
Whitetail deer typically have their fawns from mid-May through June. They carry their fawns for a gestation period of about 200 days. They will usually have between 1 and 3 fawns. For the first few weeks of the fawns lives, their mothers will leave them hidden is tall grass or brush to avoid predators as they grow and become more stable on their feet. The fawns are born without scent and their spotted coats provide perfect camouflage.

“Mrs. Skunk”
I while ago I went on a hike in the woods behind my house and came across these big rocks. I thought there is no way something doesn’t call this home. So, I set up a trail camera and sure enough that night this beautiful skunk came out of the rocks. One of my favorite things about skunks is the females ability to "pause" their pregnancies. If a skunk mates too early in the breeding season or if conditions are not favorable and food is scarce, she can temporarily stop the development of the babies until the conditions are better. This ensures that no matter when they breed the babies will always be born perfectly in tune with the spring, when temperatures are mild and insects and grubs are widely available.

“Wolf Spider Mother”
Have you ever thought about a spider being a good mother? Wolf spiders are an excellent example of good mothers in nature. Instead of leaving their eggs in a web, the female attaches the round, silken egg sac to the spinnerets at the end of her abdomen. With it she will continue to hunt and move around. She carries it everywhere. Wolf spider eggs typically take 2 to 3 weeks to hatch, but if there is a cold front, it can take over 2 months for the eggs to hatch. When the eggs start the hatch the mother will tare open the silk sack to release hundreds spiderlings. Once the spiderlings hatch, they ride on her back for up to two weeks or until they are big enough to hunt for themselves.

“Quick Snack”
Golden-mantled ground squirrels are omnivores and have a very diverse diet that changes with the seasons. A large portion of their diet consists of mushrooms and other fungi. They also hunt for pine nuts and acorns, leaves, flowers, buds, bulbs (like wild onions), and roots. They will also eat beetles, worms and crickets. They will eat bird eggs, young birds, small mammals, and lizards. Golden-mantled ground squirrels consume about 10%
of its body weight in food daily.

“Where is Mama?”
It is always a startling experience to come around a corner and seeing a bear cub. The look he gave me was just as surprised as I was. The old saying is that wherever there is a cub the mother isn’t far away. I didn’t see the mother this time, but I’m sure she was close.

“Nighthawk”
Nighthawks are a small nocturnal, insect-eating bird of the nightjar family. They are known for their erratic flight patterns, loud nasal calls, and spectacular "booming" dives made by air rushing over their wings during courtship.
Nighthawks do not build nests, instead eggs are laid on gravelly surfaces like beaches, rocky outcrops, or a flat roof.

“Mason Bee”
Mason Bees are a solitary species of bee that builds its nest in hollow cavities. They don’t chew their own holes, rather they rely on pre-existing holes. This could be from old beetle holes or hollow plant stems. Once the Mason Bee finds a suitable spot she will lay one egg and then gather and mix pollen with nectar to form a "pollen loaf" and put it inside each of their individual brood hollows. Then she will fill the cavity with mud to protect the larvae as it grows.

“Melissa Blue Butterfly”
This is a Melissa Blue Butterfly. Its wing span is a little more than an inch long. The underside of the wings is this light color with a black outline and orange bands. The top of the wings is a striking blue. As caterpillars they mainly feed on wild lupine, then as butterflies they feed on the nectar of various wild flowers. The Melissa Blue Butterfly is considered an endangered species.

“Eight-spotted Skimmer”
The warm weather is bringing out insects like this Eight-spotted Skimmer. It is a common type of dragonfly named for the eight black spots on their wings. They are around two inches long and their diet consists of Mosquitoes, flies, moths, mayflies, termites and other flying insects. Dragonflies are one of the most successful predators on Earth, they have a success rate of 90% to 97%. They are very agile and are able to intercept prey in midair, adjusting to sudden, unpredictable movements, and utilizing 360-degree vision.
