Josh Paradis: architect, athlete, and one of the most disciplined yogis I know. This is the second photoshoot we've done together. He wanted to redo some of the postures as they were not perfect enough (for him). These photos are part of an ongoing project to show yoga is for Everyone. Josh was an extreme athlete and has many plates and screws in his legs, arms and shoulders but he uses hot yoga to heal himself.

Part of an amazing trip to Singapore and Malaysia with Melisa this past August. Singapore at sunrise is always such a treat. One that I first enjoyed with friends many years ago. After sunrise Melisa and I went for kaya toast and koi/teh (coffee/tea). She became a connoisseur of local cuisine, not letting me settle for something easy when we were hungry. Instead she marched me a few new blocks to get the better noodles!

Menzies Baby Blue Eyes
Nemophila Menziesii

Seen at MacKerricher State Park with my favorite amateur botanist, Melisa (my daughter). This was part of a six day trip across Northern California in search of wildflowers in April during her spring break. If you’ve followed this account for a while you will know I’m new to macro flower photography but Melisa’s passion for flowers inspired me to try it out. We make a good team. She plans the trips and identifies what flowers she wants to try and find. I drive the van, cook, and take photos of what she tells me to. She doesn’t mind when I obsess about getting the shot. She happily walks up the trail and pings me on the walkie talkie. She is a fierce naturalist in the field. Never once has she said she’s tired or hungry or hot or cold. Of course I am as prepared as possible with plenty of jackets, water, food, etc but it’s impressive how she is a young woman on a mission and won’t be deterred. She’s opened my eyes to the beauty in every square meter of California

Horse Skull with Frost

Taken in February of 2022 in Monument Valley. I took my two daughters on a tour of the Southwest. We visited national parks, slot canyons, pink sand dunes and the otherworldly features of the high desert. But what both of my daughters agreed was the best and most memorable experience was a day visiting Monument Valley with Carl . He’s an excellent guide and a wonderful person. He spoke to them about the customs, traditions and worldview of the Navajo and what it means to be a young woman coming of age. They hung on his every word and I know they will remember this experience forever. We were shooting the sunrise when Carl called me over to see the skeletal remains of a wolf horse who likely died in a drought a few years before. This is a harsh land and it takes tremendous strength and perseverance to survive, something the Navajo have shown over and over throughout their history.

One of the biggest reasons I came to Cuetzalan was to take portraits during market day. I'm not a street photographer and I find it challenging to walk up to someone and ask to take their photo. The tactic of surreptitiously taking someone's portrait without express permission is technically legal but to me, unethical. I draw a distinction between a photo of a market scene, for example, with many people, in it and a portrait of a single person. In the former the market is the subject and the people are part of this theme. In the second example a single person is the subject and it is their image that is being used. In this situation I make sure to get permission. This is where it gets interesting. Some people, mostly those who had shops in town, said yes outright or asked where I am going to use the images before saying yes. A few of the people who set up stalls in the market said yes but most hesitated to respond. I realized I represent a potential customer they don't want to say no to but are also busy working their stall. This photo was one of the few where I received an outright yes. Probably because I kneeled down and explained the light was just right and could I please take a photo of her and her husband.

I first visited Cuetzalan in 1994 as a student in Puebla. I returned 28 years later to find the town mostly unchanged. The Peña Los Jarritos where I once listened to local musicians strum guitar and serenade the audience with love songs is still there mostly unchanged except for the large screen TVs wheeled out for the World Cup. This gentleman was seated outside a corner store and gave me this unflinching look after I asked to take his photo and he nodded.

Cuetzalan was one of the first towns to receive the designation of Pueblo Mágico. The Mexican Secretariat of Tourism created the program to identify and preserve towns of outstanding beauty, cultural & historical significance. There are only 32 such towns in all of Mexico despite there being hundreds of worthy candidates. I asked this woman if I could take a photo and she said yes but then insisted, "only the flowers".

Market Day is held on Sunday and sees the sleepy town wake up with a deep breath and the long exhale of buying and selling, eating and drinking, greeting friends and bartering for everything from produce to meat, arts and crafts, woven goods, clothing and even flavored liquors. The market was winding down when I took this photo. I asked permission to take the photo and she replied with grace, "Si me invitas a un refresco -For a soft drink I will". I smiled and we agreed the money for a soft drink was a better use of her time than me looking for a place to buy a soda.

Cuetzalan floats above the clouds one moment and swims in fog the next. The town crowns the rain forest surrounding it high in the hills between the central Mexican State of Puebla and the Gulf Coast of Veracruz. I bought a scarf and part of the negotiation was a photo. The soft light through the afternoon fog made this portrait. She was amused I wanted to take her photo and while her friends giggled her eyes smiled more than the corners of her mouth.
